I agree. However, I do understand how at first look, it looks very lopsided. The priests known for sexual misconduct with children and the priest who says Latin Mass. The Latin mass is not what is at issue, but who the priest said the latin mass for.Deacon 2006 is right, your reasoning is seriously flawed. You can’t moan and groan that the Bishops did not exercise discipline enough back in the 70s and 80s (when most of the cases of priestly sexual misconduct occurred) and at the same time complain that the Bishops are exercising discipline now.
And it’s not just a matter of saying a “little Latin Mass” or even just of discipline. If the media coverage is true (and it may not be accurate) this priest has alligned himself with schismatics. Schism is a really big deal. This particular schism has hurt thousands of Catholics and torn unnumbered families apart.
This is not meant to minimize priestly sexual misconduct or the action or inaction of the Bishops involved. That was a grave and serious matter. So is what is happening to this priest.
And of course, we don’t know the whole story anyway. Only what the press chooses to feed us.
In our parish, we have a Latin Mass once a month. It is not done for a schismatic group but for our parish. Our Bishop supports this, however a couple of years ago, one of the priest in the diocese, went to our bishop and admitted to sexual misconduct with a minor. This priest was at once suspended. This was reported in both the local secular paper as well as the local Catholic paper. So as far as our Bishop is concerned, I feel that is doing what is right. Now are diocese is still young, 15 years old
but old enough to see some abuses coming to light.
