Recently I have started studying the Pastoral Epistles/Letters, 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus.

Is there anyone out there studying them who would like to join me in a discussion group?

Yes, I just finished a couple of bible studies on them and I’d love to.

many thanks for your reply.

Should we start the discussion here and see will others join us?

The first question is who wrote the Pastoral Epistles. If Paul did nor, someone is telling lies. However to get bogged down in who the writer was would prevent progress.

Do the Pastorals differ from other books in the NT?

What references did you find helpful in studying the Pastorals?

How do they help us? Is the encouragement and advice in them similar to the ethics of the Greco-Roman age.

They encourage right teaching. What are the dogmas they advocate?

Here are a few queries. Would you like to focus a some of these, or others you think are interesting?

I’m currently finishing up reading the Navarre and the Ignatius on the Pastorals. I recently read the “Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture” series. All three are good reads. The CCoSS is a very thorough commentary, even more so than the first two. I highly recommend any one of the three series.

I think the Pastorals (and yes, they are written by Paul!) are good examples of how Bishops and Priests should carry themselves. I wish the Church would spend more time on these books in their liturgical cycle.

I’m interested in your thoughts on this, for at first glance, I am clueless on this question.

Thanks for your most recent reply.

I have the Navarre Bible NT (Compact Edition). I do not have the other commentaries you suggest.

Perhaps I could read this and let you know my thoughts.

I would like more to join in this project.

It would be interesting to see what the Pastorals have to contribute to our thinking at the present time.

Do you think they tell us how to respond to Obama’s administration?

In the early Church the teaching of the gospel and the beliefs of the Roman Empire differed yet the Pastorals encourage loyalty to the state. Would this be an interesting (and not too inflammatory) topic?
