It is common knowledge that Luther disliked the Deuterocanon, even calling it ‘Apocrypha’ and seeking to remove them out of the Bible. (He once remarked that the books might be inspiring and good to read, a nice worship resource but they are not Scripture)

He succeded in removing these from the Old Testament of his 1534 Bible, moving it on a section called ‘Apocrypha’ (which many 20th century printings had omitted). 1 and 2 Esdras, which is in the Vulgate was omitted entirely.

He also expressed some doubts about some New Testament Books (these type of disputed books are called in Greek Antilegomenon, which means disputed or contradicted). His Antilegomena is the Epistle of James, Hebrews, Jude and Revelation. He did not move them out on a separate section as the OT Books but just moved them at the end section of the NT.

As for the King James Version, the original 1611 version also had the Deuterocanon (and printings in the U.K. where it is still under Copyright unlike everywhere else where it is now under public domain). As many of you know, America was once under British rule and since the Crown did not license any printers in America to print the Bible, it was illegal to do so until America declared Independence from Britain. And since there were no international copyright treaties at the time, Americans could now print the English Bible legally and profitably.

The First Great Awakening had made a huge demand upon Bibles. Printers discovered that they could remove the Deuterocanon from the Bible and still sell it at the same price (no one cared since America was Protestant then and the Deutero’s was not used much). So thus they did to increase their profits. Then time came and people assumed that their Deutero-less Bibles were THE complete Bible until Catholics came into America.

So there you have it. The Reformers planted the seed while Printers dealt the final blow on the Deuterocanon! 😃
