Got a great book for you, Francis Cardinal George’s “The Difference God Makes.”

My first reading selection from it takes the philosophy of the incarnation and then applies it to the Church’s development of the social concept of communio and participation.

I had just covered the Chalcedonian Doctrine the day before on my blog, using material from Fr. Robert Barron and Robert Sokolowski’s The God of Faith and Reason. I had never realized until reading George how fundamental the Incarnational philosophy was and the breadth of arguments it could be applied to.

For example I was dealing with a Jesus Denier the other day who was telling everyone the Jesus “fable” was concocted from pagan mythologies. Don’t you know, sez I, how fundamentally different the Christian conception is – it could never be copped from any pagan myth and then buried the poor soul in post for the day.

Anyways the George piece is here:

and check out the post just before it to get Fr. Barron & Sokolowski’s take on Chalcedon.

I’d like to see this part of the discussion if you could post it.

The whole thing is huge and too diverse to excerpt.

You can find it here:

I’ve withdrawn from the site after the admin/owner accused me of homophobia for advancing a Church held teaching on Gay Marriage. He, BTW, is Catholic, so I was genuinely shocked by the treatment I received. I don’t mind catcalls from atheists and Homosexualists but when a fellow Catholic says you are homophobic for expressing Church held teachings, I had to draw a line.

So my warning is that the site is Anti-Catholic and I would not contribute to it. Let it sink in its own iniquity.

A new post from yesterday.

payingattentiontothesky.com/2010/01/13/francis-cardinal-george-on-the-emergence-of-the-modern/

Francis Cardinal George takes us from the complex development (and corruption) of the Augustinian notion of the City of God affecting the City of Man through late antiquity and the Middle Ages until the Emergence of the Modern.

I always find this transition in history so interesting because I was brought up to celebrate the “birth of science” and the “Age of Rationalism” or “The Enlightenment.” Nowadays I tend to think of it as “The Darkenment,” which is another extreme but at least captures the sense that something was lost as well as gained.
