And the reason for that was that most “Papal Masses” were not celebrated by the Pope. Rather, it would be celebrated in his presence. The throne (or the faldstool, I forget which) would be placed before the Altar, with another Altar set up before the steps. This is completely dfferant from purposefuly having the Altar facing the congregation.
True, but I mean actually facing the people for the Mass, not sitting at the altar versus populum in the throne for the Mass coram Pontifice. See Guardi’s picture- he is offering the Mass.

Interestingly, most of the coram Pontifice Masses themselves were also ad populum. Though being in Rome they were also ad orientum.

According to the Christ the King parish website, a picture of which was refrenced in the opening post:

Christ the King was considered far ahead of its time when a free-standing altar was constructed. Pope Pius XII had given special permission for Bishop O’Hara to celebrate the first Mass facing the people on May 9, 1954.

So apparently, the pope’s permission was required for such nonsense.

I don’t believe they had the Pope’s permission…He was hardlined.

And your proof is? It’s interesting to note that this same congregation fought for the tabernacle to not be removed from the center of the Church. They sure do sound like liberal hardliners.😉

Just reminds me of all of us that have been on the front lines fighting too against the liberals…

Well then it should probably tell you really have no reason to doubt that they obtained permission from the pope.👍
