Is it licit, from a catholic perspective, for a young unmarried teenage woman, who is a virgin and plans on remaining so, to use the pill to treat acne? The acne is serious and scarring, and cannot be improved using any topical treatment. There are side effects for both forms of oral acne treatment, which are the pill and antibiotics.

Morally, you are fine. You’re not using the pill as a contraceptive. Without the intention to prevent a pregnancy, the pill is just medication. However, I would urge you to seek a second opinion about using that as a treatment for acne. I would think there has to be something out there that is safer.

I wouldn’t see any problem with it - also I know a number of people who have used it for this reason as well as for other reasons.
Good Luck!

My understanding is that in the circumstances you described it would be permissible; however, I still recommend finding another solution for two reasons. First, the pill has a number of side effects some of which are quite serious. Second, the pill won’t correct the underlying issue and you may not always be in the position to take the pill so better to find a more permanent solution.

I can definitely empathize though. The only way I can get clear skin these days is to get pregnant (which fortunately I’m happy to do). Good luck finding a solution!

Ugh, I broke out terribly when I took the pill for relief of cramps (which didn’t really work either, btw). I would suggest exploring other options before resorting to the pill; it might not work for the acne anyway and could cause other side effects.

I do agree there are some forms that do cause all kinds of reactions but it sounds like she has checked most other options and they have some specific types that are made to also help with acne -and again had friends who have taken it and have been thrilled with the results.

TECHNICALLY fine, but beware. I work with two women in their 20s who have had their gallbladders removed in the last year because they went on the pill to clear up acne as young teens. 10 years later, their gallbladders are shot. There’s even a lawsuit: yaz-side-effects-lawyer.com/

Personally, I’d rather take the acne and keep my gallbladder.
