The Pill vs. other pharmaceuticals

It’s a fascinating story. One of the co-inventors of the pill was John Rock, a pious Catholic who thought the Church would accept the pill because it was “natural.” He thought about positioning it as a medication that had certain side effects (stopping conception), but he thought the Church would be on board with a pill that mimicked the natural processes of the body. He was wrong. He distanced himself from the Church after 1968, and it’s a rather tragic story.

I’m not going to back into this again, I have already explained this many times on this board. Having marital relations while on the pill is not worth the risk of abortion to your own child. Also taking contraception while doing the marital act, makes the act contraceptive and intrinsically evil. This is my last response to this.

You are certainly entitled to your own opinion on this. But you aren’t entitled to post it as if it is Church teaching. I think that is where the objection comes into play.

The first part of your statement about the risk of abortion is indeed your opinion. I share it however. The second part about contraception is Church teaching.

Personal opinion /= Church teaching

No matter how noble or otherwise the opinion is, we have a Pope, and it is not us
While that’s a pithy note. It runs into trouble. Any Pope can be wrong theologically in teaching. We must take into account the magesterium as well. So in cases where the Pope says that contraception can be used to combat Zika the magesterium may disagree. We live in times the laity have never seen. Where the Pope’s opinion is given on aircraft and is immediately a click away to a billion followers. Where a cardinal or bishop may publically and immediately disagree with another for all to see. Where Dubia are asked and waited on. Many popes are not the greatest theologians of their time. Some are. Church teaching is more than the Pope.

That said, it is church teaching that something taken for a legitimate medical purpose, that has the prevention of pregnancy as an effect, does not thereby become contraception, even if it is marketed as such. That’s usually where people get confused.

Lesson 1 of philosophy degree (theology too): English the way most people naturally speak it is really terrible at being precise and it’s easy to get everything confused if you don’t spend lots and lots of effort defining everything.
