“John Zmirak makes all the right heads explode. For that alone, we should be grateful.”
Okay, I think I will have to read this book.

I love that! I have some devout, lifelong, faithful Catholic friends and relatives who have been working on finally figuring out what the Church actually teaches in recent years. They’ve been astounded and troubled by a lot of what they’ve read (contraception is a big one). Amusingly, they also tend to latch on to very minor things and champion those as a symbol of how they’re a much better/more devout Catholic than I (or someone else) am. That’s great that you chastise the volunteer selling gift cards in the narthex when you show up to your required monthly Mass; now quit rolling your eyes when I tell you that the Church really does expect you to believe in and follow those other teachings you’re so quick to dismiss. He offers the rather startling statistic that the actual population of authentically faithful Catholics in America is no more than 1.2 million. The remaining 95 percent slipped into heresy likely beginning with contraception, a teaching they do not understand.
It is what the Catholic Church actually teaches and not what is commonly represented as what the Catholic Church teaches on a lot of different topics. For whatever reason, many people present the teachings incorrectly to further a political view or another agenda which would be the “politically correct” view. So the politically incorrect view is what the Church actually teaches. What is politically correct or incorrect about Catholicism? I don’t get it. I’m familiar with these series but don’t see how they would apply to Catholicism? Is the meaning Catholicism ‘warts and all’ or some such? (And if so why would that be appealing?)
So how would it be different from say, the Catechism? Isn’t the Catechism the politically incorrect guide to Catholicism? It is what the Catholic Church actually teaches and not what is commonly represented as what the Catholic Church teaches on a lot of different topics. For whatever reason, many people present the teachings incorrectly to further a political view or another agenda which would be the “politically correct” view. So the politically incorrect view is what the Church actually teaches.
It’s not really “warts and all”, but it does include a lot of warts to make the authors point.
