Cameroon – Pope Benedict XVI said condoms are not the answer to the AIDS epidemic in Africa and can make the problem worse, setting off criticism Tuesday as he began a weeklong trip to the continent where some 22 million people are living with HIV.

Benedict’s first statement on an issue that has divided even Catholic clergy working with AIDS patients came hours before he arrived in Cameroon’s capital — greeted by thousands of flag-waving faithful who stood shoulder-to-shoulder in red dirt fields and jammed downtown streets for a glimpse of the pontiff’s motorcade… What do you think

Why does he think it would make it worse?

He is teaching the Church faithful that chastity and faithful marriage is the sure way to end this disease.

He will get alot of criticism for his position but then, what else is new?

He speaks the truth. The world is not wanting the truth. The world wants an easy answer.
 
I agree with you Kestrel Rose.

OTOH–a married couple who are HIV discordant using condoms is another issue–one that I don’t intend to argue about, because I’m in no position to have a worthwhile opinion on the subject.

I understand the teaching of chastity and faithfulness, but that doesn’t answer the question for me of how condoms will make it worse.
I’m only trying to understand his statement, not argue.

What can make it worse (using a condom) is:
  1. They give people a false sense of security. Condoms were never designed to stop viruses such as HIV. The fabric is too loosely woven. It’s meant to stop sperm which are hundreds of times bigger than viruses.
  2. Condom use often promotes infidelity since people think they aren’t going to get pregnant or get a disease. We’ve already seen that the second notion is just plain wrong and the first is pretty close to it in that no condom can ever guarantee a woman won’t get pregnant.
  3. Condom use promotes the idea that married couples’ bodies are merely objects of sex for their partners not someone with whom one shares the full, uninhibited, and loving embrace of marital sex. Sex in marriage isn’t about what I can get out of it; it’s about what I can give to it.
And those reasons are just for starters.
 
I think it makes it worse in the long run do to the fact you are not getting to the root of the problem. The world wants everything easy with no consequence. We want to get rich fast = current economy problems. We want to feel perfect = pills & fad diets. We want to have sex casually = condoms & abortion.

I just think it would protect a lot of women from getting AIDs because when the men are unfaithful and then they bring it home to their wives. If everyone was a practicing Catholic who never committed adultery that would be fine, but most Africans aren’t and the reality is that most people have casual sex, especially men.
 
I do not want to see a woman infected by no fault of her own but my concern is that we are lowering the bar for humanity, not just Catholics. You name a religion or social order and I am pretty sure that they will be against promiscuous sex.

Female to male transmission of HIV is possible.

Bill the bottom line is condoms don’t prevent disease. I’ll give you a comparative example. 80% of woman have the HPV virus which can be deadly since it leads to cervical cancer. They don’t even test men because it’s so difficult to but it’s believed the same statistic exists in men. In a medical study conducted recently they followed woman and men who stayed virgins until marriage and also married virgins. 100% of them never got the HPV disease.

Now here’s the interesting part. In studying woman who abstained from sex prior to marriage, the results showed they never got the HPV virus. But once they engaged in pre-marital sex with a partner that wasn’t a virgin 30% got the HPV virus at 1 year and at 3 years over 60% got it. There was a case study done on a woman who had one life partner. She married at age 19, and ultimately developed cervical cancer. Her husband as it turns out had prior multiple partners.

I think the message our beloved Pope is trying to send is don’t have sex until you are married. That way any form of STD is eliminated. Period.

I was listening to something about this on the BBC this morning and I thought I heard someone from Africa saying that married couples needed the permission of the church in order to even use a condom.

What’s that about?

Religious dogma and telling people how to live there lives, is more important than actually saving lives, that’s what this is about.
 
Since people are going to shoot each other anyway, we should just give everyone body armor instead of trying to discourage people shooting each other.

Sound like a good idea?
