The Pope ended an audience by having a brief cell phone conversation. A handicaped person haned the Pope his cell phone and the Pope took it.

Some people were surprised. But reading his books, I am not. The Pope seems to me to be a very humble person thrust into this position by God’s wisdom (and the wisdom of our Cardinals). I may disagree with some of his political stands, but I do not doubt his holiness, humanity and humilty.

Great story and pix. The Pope is not a poltical entity. How can you disagree with his “political” positions?

Pope Benedict IS awesome! I have started reading his books to get to know him. He is definitely the Rock we need for our Church right now! 👍

An elderly man handed over his mobile and asked the pontiff to say a few words, which he did with good grace. Later, a group of Vatican firemen offered him a helmet engraved with the name Ratzinger to try ontimesonline.co.uk/article/0,20709-1656171,00.html

I agree the Pope (and God for that matter) is not a political entity, but the Pope (though presumably not God) occassionally makes political statements. I am a libertarian (what the Europeans call a “neo-liberal”) on most political and economic issues, so I often come into conflict with the political statements, though not the moral ones.

For example, the Pope opposes any sort of legal recognition of same gender relationships, whereas I would allow civil marriage rights. On the moral issue of homosexuality though, I agree with the Pope.

So I agree with his moral stance, but disagree with his political statement.

Confusing I know, but I find this Pope very intellectual, humble, holy and loving, whereas I found Pope John Paul II less intellectual, but more pastoral.

amcalabrese,

Two things. First, be careful; you are entitled to political views based upon prudential judgment, but you must be a Catholic first and a libertarian second. With regard to “same-sex marriage”, here are three sources on why it *positively harms *society (and therefore libertarians should oppose it):
Second, Pope John Paul II certainly had rich pastoral gifts, but don’t discount his intellect. Try reading some of his encyclicals, or his theology of the body. Intellectually speaking, he was a giant, and the Church is going to need a long time to unpack his writings. He had a passion for the moral theology – bioethics, social ethics – and philosophy.
