The Pope is the vicar of Christ!?

I have heard this saying very often now, but I don’t understand exactly what it is suppose to mean. What does this mean?

I’m not sure yet. I was told he is a kind of stand in guy for Jesus until he comes again, since there has to be a priest until he does. He’s simply the man who is supposed to preside in love amoung equals (the other bishops) as far as I know.

Ooohhh, the Pope does have a nice position there doesn’t he!

I wasn’t told anything. As far as I knew it was just a saying that was meant as an expression. It sounds good though.

Stand in guy. That’s not exactly high billing really when you think about it. It’s sorta a way to put the man in his place (even if men on earth have gone overboard with pope worship)

Huh? …you think the position of Pope is wrong? Am I reading your post wrong? If that is what you believe though, that’s okay, I understand that. I use to think the same too. It was all a bit “over the top”, I use to think.

I don’t have a problem with the position of a bishop of Rome that presides in love amoung equals. Not at all. Nor do I have a particular problem with the Bishop of Rome having the responsibility and burden of being the one to make the final call on all matters that escalate to that level.

Fine and good. I just wonder how many of the laypersons of that era even knew this, or that they ever had to know this. Or ever cared?

The begginings of things, were bumpy and most of it seemingly due to technical difficulty in transporting information safely, and timely.

Christ appointed Peter as head of the Apostles. That is apparent in Scripture. He also gave him the “keys to the Kingdom”. He was to stand in for Jesus when the Church was ‘born’ on Pentecost. He is like a “prime minister”. People may agree or disagree with this notion; however, that is what we have today in the pontificate (chair of Peter).
