Here is a good one. Think about this. Lets say there was a debate on tv about who can explain scripture the best and the most accurate. First of all I dont think there is any religion that would have a person even willing to go up against the Pope. One on One. And if they did how long do you think they would last? And i bet if money was involved the pope would have 1000 to 1 odds in his favor and that still wouldnt be enough. And yet how many people in this world would bet on him for the almighty dollar, but wont listen to him to help save thier soul?

This gift of truth and never-failing faith was therefore divinely conferred on Peter and his successors in this See so that they might discharge their exalted office for the salvation of all, and so that the whole flock of Christ might be kept away by them from the poisonous food of error and be nourished with the sustenance of heavenly doctrine. Thus the tendency to schism is removed and the whole Church is preserved in unity, and, resting on its foundation, can stand firm against the gates of hell

I think there are a lot of people who would be willing to go up against the Pope.

I was born and raised evangelical Protestant, and one of the traits that I had and still have is arrogance. Back then, I thought it was confidence and faith in the Lord, but now I recognize it for what it really is–arrogance in my own knowledge about God and the Bible.

I honestly thought I had a lock on eternal truth. After all, that’s what we were told over and over again–we have the words of eternal life.

Although I don’t mean to be disrespectful of evangelical Protestant Christians, I believe there are a lot of evangelical Protestants, especially teenagers and young people, who truly think that their knowledge of the Bible is all that is needed, and they would willingly and happily stand up against the Pope, or any Pope in history, or any saint who has ever lived.

BTW, one of the first things that an evangelical Protestant would say to the Pope or to any Catholic is that “Christianity is not a religion, it’s a relationship with a Person, Jesus Christ.”

Another thing–a lot of Protestants know Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic, and would be happy to pit their knowledge of Biblical languages against the Pope’s. They would also be happy to use their knowledge of textual criticism and other interpretative devices to prove that their Scriptural interpretations are right and the Popes are wrong. Never underestimate the scholarship of Protestants.

One person who comes to mind is R.C. Sproule. This man is incredibly intelligent and could probably hold his own against the Pope for many hours. I would actually like to see this debate! OTOH, Sproule is not arrogant, IMO. I believe he would demonstrate a respectful attitude and humbly decline the opportunity to debate Pope Benedict XVI.

Well, said. I converted in '04 as well!!

Sadly, that arrogance is the downfall of many Protestant Evangelicals. They allow their perceived knowledge to override their Christian charity many times. I have had many, and I live in the south, at my door telling me I am bound for hell in this “Whore of Babylon” church…they read way too many Chick Tracts. 🤷

Pax Vobiscum

I would love to watch this but I wonder how many would tune in, and how many would be closed off to whatever the Pope said before it even started?

I bet it would be record reviews. I would give my eye teeth to see it.

I would be very, very surprised if any Protestant leader could win a debate on any given dogmatic/doctrinal matter with Benedict XVI. There are a few who could give him a good run – someone mentioned the Reformed theologian R.C. Sproul, who would, I agree, be a top candidate; I would also cite the Lutheran theologian Robert Jenson – but in the end, no dice. Benedict is quite simply one of the most brilliant Christian theologians of all-time. He would probably own John Paul II in a debate.

You know John Paul ll was always the man. I just adore him. But i must say i may have to give you this one. I read his book Jesus of Nazarath. IT just was incredible. I know all Popes have a special gift from God. as far as we all know understanding scripture, this is nothing new. But Benedict XVl can bring it home to our level. Its unreal. I can say the best book i have ever read in my life.
