Peace be on you all,

Does the pope has to be a roman catholic?

Technically, any Catholic male who has reached the age of reason, is not a heretic, is not in schism, and is not “notorious” for simony can be elected pope

JL: The peace of Christ be on you Anewconvert, Your accent sounds Arabic. (Joking) Where are you from, if you don’t mind saying? Welcome to the faith.

No, he can be from any Catholic Church (Roman Catholic, Ukrainian Catholic, Greek Catholic, Chaldean, Melkite, Maronite, etc. etc).

How old are you? That would help me in answering this question, are you for real?   ?

Do you think an atheist, rabbi, Mahometan, or Jehovah’s Witness would want the job?

Aren’t Eastern Rite Catholics also “Roman Catholic” since they are in communion with the Bishop of Rome?

I don’t think “Latin Rite” is synonymous with “Roman Catholic”, is it?

Most, I’m sure, wouldn’t like to be called ‘Roman’ Catholic, since they are not Roman, do not use the Roman rite, and are connected to their own distinct spirituality.

Any time I’ve seen anything about the Eastern churches written by someone who would know, they never refer to Eastern Catholics as Roman. It makes sense, because they aren’t.

The Pope Is the head of The Catholic Church So Yes He would have to be a Catholic, I mean what would say an Athiest or Protestant know about leading the CATHOLIC CHURCH?

I’m sure an eastern catholic could be elected pope. Do they have eastern Catholic cardinals by the way?

Yes The Eastern Rite Has Cardinals, And as long as they are inline with the Pope then they can become Pope, The Tridentine church that follows the Pope before vatican two is not following the true teachings so therefore can not become Pope But most other branches can. As Long as Catholic. Bu the Cardinals in Rome get together and elect the next Pope.

I’m 28 years old male and new to the faith. It’s very good I think :signofcross: Jlhargus: I was from Jordan but not anymore.

My new friends laugh of my question so I ask them here. Thank you. I like to learn.

Faustina2001 you know a lot of the faith. May I ask a stupid question?

There is more then one Eastern rite. There are at least five eastern liturgical traditions. Eastern Churches have bishops who are Cardinals and celebrate eastern liturgical rites, but “the Eastern Rite” doesn’t have any cardinals.

Latin Rite IS synonymous with Roman Catholic. The Eastern Catholics are not Roman Catholics but we are all part of the Catholic Church.
