The Pope's red shoes

Sorry for my ignorance, but I was noticing during the Pope’s recent visit to NYC (and thanks to all the wonderful media coverage) that whenever his shoes were visible, they were red…is this a tradition…his preference…or something else?

Yes it is a long held tradition – red slippers around the Vatican and red leather shoes outside of it. Pope Benedict wear red leather shoes made by a custom cobbler – not Prada.
 
This was remarked upon not long after the pope began his current reign. He doesn’t seem to have changed his preferences in shoe color.

I’m curious what color shoes John Paul and Paul VI used.

All but JPII (brown) wore red shoes and the slippers. Benedict does not wear the red slippers from what I understand.

Why would you call the Pope Benedict’s shoes “monstrosities?” Because they are red? Because you have poor taste? They are clearly very simple loafers. “Monstrosities?” Hardly.
 
I found it interesting to learn that Pope Benedict XVI sometimes uses “historical” vestments (i.e., vestments worn by past Popes); Something that I don’t think John Paul II did… at least, not that I was aware of. 😃

It has taken me two whole days to figure out that differing opinions aren’t welcome here.

I could care less what he wears.

Because of various foot deformities, I am forced to wear hideous orthodoedic shoes that are black and ugly and huge to accomodate my various inserts and braces. I went shopping for a “mother of the bride” dress today and realized to my despair that there is nothing I can wear that will go with my “monstrosities.”

Yet at the same time, I am grateful that these ugly shoes allow me to walk and move about and even do a workout on an elliptical machine. There are some people who have very limited mobility and can’t walk at all.

So I’ll wear my ugly boats and be grateful for them. And I’ll find something for the wedding.

If the Pope wants to wear red shoes, big deal. My daughter’s bridesmaids are wearing red shoes in the wedding. I’ll pray for him when I see them!

My favorite actor (Robert Patrick!) wears green keds everywhere, even to awards ceremonies! .

Try looking-up “monstrosity” before you misuse the word again.

In no way are those shoes “monstrosities.” None. Not my color? Different? Ugly? Not my taste? Flashy? Bad taste? Fine. But they aren’t “monstrosities.”

In all actuality they aren’t “hideously ugly” either – they are extremely simple loafers with very clean and classic lines – just red in color. Color aside, if you truly consider shoes with such classic, simple and clean lines to be “hideously ugly” then it would appear you have bad taste. They may not be your favorites, but no one with good taste would label them as “hideously ugly.”

So dial-back the hyperbole, particularly when it comes to the Holy Father.

Twasn’t hyperbole. 'Twas opinion, directed at ugly shoes, not a human being. Get over it, and “dial back” the condescension when it comes to me. 👍

Spiller, before you get all needlessly belt out of shape…again in your attempts to dictate the opinions of others, I am referring in the above quote, of course, to definition number 2; certainly not 1.

I looked up the word for priest in Strong’s Concordance and it says the priest is a mediator, a moderator at liturgical functions, and one who dresses in regalia (“regal”).

So, as high priest of the Catholic Church, he dresses symbolically as a king, as does every priest at Mass.

That’s the way it is, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

If someone wants to drag the Pope down in any way, such as this, then they’re not talking about a pope any more.
