The Positives and Negatives of Christian Diversity

Christianity is very very diverse. Dozens of major sects with conflicting beliefs spread over thousands of independently running congregations. Is this a good thing or mostly a bad thing?

Negatives:
  1. The competition sometimes turns violent.
  2. Leads some people to believe there is something deeply wrong with the religion.
Positives:
  1. It promotes religious tolerance and various freedoms.
  2. It promotes debate & criticism, keeping the mind sharp, which in turn…
  3. …keeps each sect in check, which moderates corruption & misdeeds among the churches.
  4. It promotes competition which keeps spirituality active.
 
On the night before he died Jesus called for unity among his followers over and over. Disunity is a crime against Christ.
 
One of your negatives should include…guarantee of incomplete or false truths.
 
The catholic church is not a denomination and does not teach conflicting truths.

She has no “competition”.

I would like Christianity to be United by peaceful dialogue, that could end confusion in the believers of this religion.

If the eyes of the world are any indication of what one must seek for confirmation of truth- then your statement would be valid.

However, the eyes of the world are only further proof that the world is nutter.

Jesus said his Kingdom was NOT of this world.

So, you continue to prove the Church’s legitamacy in your statements.👍

And your point is? Christ prayed that we would be one as he and the father are one. He founded a Church, which the gates of hell will not prevail against. Does it really matter what any of those who have choosen to separate themselves from the complete truth think or should we follow those who Christ handed the faith down to?

that the rcc is just one of the many groups that makes up christianity.

and my point was that Christ founded a Church and that those who separate themselves from it do not have the complete truth and by seperating themselves from truth will be led off of the narrow path. So we should only listen to the one Church and discount all the others that do not contain the fullness of faith.

i know that is the point of many christian groups, not just the rcc. to each his own. 🤷

cant you make out anything positive about the reality of christian diversity?

Diversity in the sence of christianity being split into so many faiths, beliefs, denominations I personally see nothing positive about it. We should try to be one as Jesus and the Father are one. If this was not important then why was it one of the last things Jesus prayed for?

Hey, diversity is good. If a field of corn is made up of just one type, one disease could wipe out the whole crop. But a diversity of corn means that some corn will always survive.👍

Love one another as I have loved you, by this all men will know that you are my disciples. Our lack of visible love for each other highlights Christian disunity.

I am a Catholic and today I was in an Anglican church with Anglicans, Baptists and Methodists. We are striving to overcome this apparent lack of love for each other and work together in the community through an initiative called Street Pastors.

The churches are starting to recognise that our youth are very troubled and suffer with all kinds of issues. We shall be going out in twos from 8pm to midnight on Friday and Saturday evenings amongst the gangs, drunks and vandals hoping to bring about some peace.

Christian unity and interfaith relations will happen when people can work together to build communities, and there is a visible love present.

Thanks for your reply, scriptures tell us why we should be as one, yet we just seem so stubborn. We seem to prefer all the stuff that causes division.

Your right Eric. I constantly find myself trying to win an argument about scripture or doctrine which isn’t always the christian thing to do. It is important to speak the truth but not essential to win arguements. Sometimes it’s hard to remember that our example is the best way to spread the message of Christ.

I’m glad to hear that you’re working together for a common good. Have you noticed a change in the community or the different faith groups so far?

I have noticed a change in myself, and I find a greater joy working with people of other faiths rather than with people of my own Catholic faith. The reason is this, when you work with people outside your own group you are more vulnerable and you have to strive harder to work together through the spirit.

I are very aware of our differences but despite all the things that separate us there are still ways to strive to bring glory to God
