Question: does the one-hour fast begin an hour before the start of the Mass, or an hour before one anticipates Communion being distributed?

And either way, does toothpaste break the fast?

Thanks! :o

One Hour brefore receiving Holy Communion. Water and Medicine are only allowed. Toothpaste is not medicine.

It’s one hour before receiving the Eucharist. One hour before Mass is a good rule of thumb because it guarantees the hour fast. I don’t usually eat toothpaste, as it says not to on the tube,:tsktsk: but if you swallow a little by mistake it does not take away from the fast. God Bless:)

Yes! It is required that you fast one hour before receiving Holy Communion.

If you are worried about timing your fast then, to be sure, I would suggest that you fast one hour before the start of Mass.

You at least then have a definite time to watch for.

Tell me you don’t eat toothpaste. Please.

As others have told you, brushing one’s teeth does not break the fast. You should in fact do so, esp. if you are receiving on the tongue, and opening your mouth wide enough to receive that way.😉

And as others have told you, it’s one hour before RECEIVING COMMUNION. So time your tea, coffee, cookie and snack intake carefully. If your tummy grumbles, grab a glass of water before you go to Mass.

If you are pregnant or not in good health, the fast does not apply, short as it is.

It depends on the toothpaste. Crest and the older, single-color toothpastes are okay, but the multi-colored types like Mentadent and Aqua Fresh are more substantial and considered a partial meal by the Church, so if I were you, I’d stick to a simple mixture of salt and baking soda for brushing before Mass.

JUST KIDDING!

:rotfl:

Salt and baking soda are food items, so stick to the toothpaste!
