The priest messed up consecration

I was at mass today and during the consecration, the priest held up the chalice which contained the wine and said “this is my body…(and the rest of it)”. Then paused, realizing his mistake, picked up the bread and then said “this is my body…” and then so on. I was confused by the mistake, as this has never happened before. I thought to myself that I would abstain from the Eucharist just in case…but saw him go to the tabernacle to get more hosts that were already consecrated. So I thought that ok, I’ll just be in the back and get one of those ones.

Anyway, what is a Catholic to do in a situation like that? Just assume that the priest knows what he is doing and receive faithfully?

In this specific case you say the priest noticed his mistake and then did it correctly. So I’m not aware of anything to have worried about here.

What about in a situation where you are not quite sure? Do you assume that the priest knows what he’s doing and trust him and receive faithfully even if you think he’s made a mistake? (But are not fully sure)

You only have to receive once a year so there is no need to worry as you are, this seems to be a case of scrupulous

Sounds like you have some issues. Why are you doubting or “not fully sure” that the priest knows what he is doing and doing things properly regarding the consecration. This seems to be leaning towards a scrupulosity issue.

Talk to your priest if you have anxiety over this.

Much ado, about nothing. The priest corrected his mistake. Move on…

Human beings make mistakes. Your priest corrected his mistake on the spot. Be charitable.
