The privilege of being at World Youth Day

What an uplifting entry! A welcome relief from all the secular media’s negativity!

Does anyone know why King Juan Carlos is walking with a cane and looking rather ‘wobbly’ gait-wise? Is he ill? It’s driving me nuts-no one is saying anything!

I’m watching the commentary by Father Mark, Father Miguel and Doug Barry. I know that they are focussing on the problems faced by the young as to what God wants of their lives. Well, sometimes even OLDER Catholics like myself don’t know, either! I sure don’t know as a single middle-aged woman! I get kind of tired of feeling chopped liver in the Church!

OK, end of rant…it was a great trip, nevertheless…

My son went on his own - no group, no map, $300 in his pocket, speaking no Spanish. Bismarck once said that God proects fools, drunkards, and Americans. Got two out of three with my son!

Enjoyed it tremendously, and had a lot of serendipitous good fortune meeting people he knew from the U.S.

I’m negative about on Rio BTW. Crime-ridden, shantytown city with odd religions all over the place that is not the best place in South America for such a gathering. Santiago de Chile or Buenos Aires would have been far, far better IMO.

Bravo on your son!

As to Rio: Cities are chosen for a WYD based in part on the perceived spiritual need there; for example, Sydney was chosen last time because the Catholic Church in Australia needed a boost, as it were. After WYD08, the seminaries of Australia were said to be at capacity.

I can easily see how Rio de Janeiro could be perceived as a place of spiritual need.

And as to B.A., no city has had a WYD twice. They had it in 1989(?).

So they postponed it to 2014? Well, such is life.

That at least gives everybody another year to raise funds and to prepare spiritually.

I did not go to Madrid, as I am now overage, however, I was at Toronto02, Koln05, and SYD08. I’d say, if someone is physically able and has or can raise the $$$ needed, by all means, go! It’s a unique experience and, in essence, the modern version of the old pilgrimage tradition.

There were fund-raisers in my parish to help with the cost of attending. Tell me; what did you do besides attend lengthy masses? Seems like that’s all that was shown on TV.

While I was not at Madrid, at the 3 WYDs I was a part of, the seven days surrounding WYD are fully booked up with catechism session, cultural events, music, etc, as well as the Via Crucis the day before the vigil, Adoration sessions (at SYD08, this took place in the world-famous Sydney Opera House) and other faith activities.

Went to WYD for the first time this year as a chaperon of a parish group. My main, very strongly held, opinion is that it is a wonderful gathering for young adults (18-30) and not as appropriate for high school youth (15-18).

Europe and most of the rest of the world thinks of college-aged people when they say “youth” and that is what the event is geared toward – young adults who can navigate on their own, don’t really need chaperone’s (although they may travel with a group leader). In the US, youth are usually thought of as high schoolers. Our group definitely got something out of WYD, but the older ones in the group got more since the messages of the event were directed at them.

For example, in our catechizes sessions, the testimonies were given by youth ages 19 to 31. No one was talking about the issues facing high school sophomores! Also, because we had a group of minors, when part of our group became ill from heat exhaustion, we could not take the well ones out to the airfield for the vigil because of our chaperone numbers. This was a sacrifice for everyone. If we had been a group of college aged youth, dividing up the group would have been much easier and we probably would have done it much more often since there were so many diffierent activites to participate in.

Would I go again, proably I won’t since I’m not a youth (by any definition) 🙂 . My daughter, who was one of the older ones in our group, is excited to go again, and I would have no trouble with her going. I have already spoken to the youth leader and priest who went with our group about not taking young high schoolers and they agree with me.

The next WYD will be in 2013. It is usually every 3 years (that has been the recent pattern), but was brought forward because of the World Cup Futbol championship being in Buenos Aires in 2014.
