**The USA is a democracy, and its people could easily make the nuclear stand-off with Russia “go away” by electing leaders who would be willing to unilaterally disarm our nuclear weapons.
It is as simple as that.
The USA is not at war with Russia and never has been.
The idea that Russia would immediately launch a nuclear attack against the USA the moment it stood down its nuclear weapons of retaliation is just silly.
The Russians are just as afraid of us as we are of them.
A nuclear war is much more likely to be started out of fear of being attacked than it is for aggressive reasons.
“Defense” would be an anti-missile system, or an underground bunker, or an anti-aircraft gun.
ICBMs are not “defense.” They are instruments of retaliation and vengeance, outright terrorism plain and simple.
Perhaps the reason that we are so eager to classify these horrible creations as “defense” as that we do not want to admit that the USA is the largest terrorist country in the world.
As for the Cuban Crisis, all of JFK’s advisors wanted an invasion.
Unbeknownst to them was the fact that Cuban generals had tactical nuclear weapons at their disposal as well as the advance authorization to use them if necessary.
And a Soviet submarine was just one officer’s ok away from attacking the US fleet with a nuclear armed torpedo.
While it is true that JFK’s diplomacy eventually led to a resolution, it was just pure luck that prevented a nuclear war.
Let’s imagine that two men reside in a town, and each thinks that he should be the town sheriff. They sit together at a table, and each holds a loaded pistol pointed at the other’s head.
Each is afraid to fire out of fear that that shooting will cause the other’s gun to fire also.
But neither is willing to put down his pistol, not so much out of fear of being shot if he does so, but more out of an intense resistance to the idea of ceding the position of town sheriff to the other.
Adding to this insanity is the the fact that one of these guys is afflicted with multiple personality syndrome: every eight years a new and unpredictable identity pops up in his brain.
I really is time for someone to come to their senses and put down their gun. That brave action falls by default to the USA. **
