So what is the purpose of having soul/self then if everything could be defined by brain functioning?
Mary is confusing brain, mind, and soul. The soul has the powers of knowing, reasoning, remembering and willing, among others. Mind is a term we ascribe to the intellectual, willing, remembering powers of the soul. It is not a separate thing in the soul. And brain is the physical tool the intellectual powers of the soul uses to make man function as a rational animal.

I have two simple questions for you: First, if soul is the essence why we have mental dysfunction when we have brain problem? Second, what is the brain functioning if the main mental process is performed by soul?
The function of different parts of the brain are associated with different parts of our body or mind. If the physical parts of the brain suffer a problem, then what that part is associated with suffers a problem.

The soul is not the brain or the functioning of the brain. Problems that develop in the brain, like problems that develop with other parts of the physical body is not the soul.

Mental process is not performed by the soul.

The ideas you point to in several posts as being from the soul - are not from the soul.

On a side note,
You didn’t answer me that what is brain functioning then if everything is comprehended by soul?
Although you may be unaware, it can be seen as rude to simply reply to someone who took the time to answer you with “you didn’t answer me…”

Brain function is for the mental and physical aspects of the body. The soul is not the mental or physical aspect of the body.

First, soul doesn’t get old like our body, second we forget thing as we age, in some extreme case we could get alzheimer and we then have many mental dysfunction in late stage of disease. If our soul is our essence then how we could have mental dysfunction.
Because it is the nature of the soul that its powers function through a human body, that is the way God made us. And the soul functions most efficiently in a healthy body. When the body deteriorates because of age or illness, our intellectual processes become correspondingly less efficient. But even if the intellectual functions cease, as long as we are alive, the souls powers still exist potentially, they still exist but in a dormant state.

And what is body and what is its functioning?

Brother, if you don’t know what the human body is you must be from another planet. I know in some circles it is cute to profess some sort of Idealism where nothing is real, but the fact is, no one can communicate with such people. It is like talking to a moving shadow.

You are a shadow and your ideas are even more misty. Who in the world knows what you mean about anything. I can’t pick out one real, concrete thing in anything you’ve said here that means anything real.

I meant, we all know what is mind functioning, it is responsible for memory, thoughts, feeling, free will, intuition etc. My question is in fact very simple, if mind does all these sort of thing then what is body functioning? What exactly body does since its functioning affect our mind greatly and this is something that you agree with it? Simple what is body’s role in this exchange of information etc?

The material brain - and the physical body - is basically the mind’s gateway to the material world via the five senses; and the immaterial mind is metaphysical, which is to say that the mind is something a person cannot physically see, hear, taste, smell, or touch. The metaphysical nature of the immaterial mind is not susceptible to deterioration or destruction; but the physical nature of the material brain is. Therefore, the mind, unlike the brain, remains outside the laws of physics and is unharmed by any physical injury that may happen to the brain as the result of any number of things. For instance, if the medical profession has diagnosed a person in a coma as being “brain dead,” that doesn’t mean that the person in a coma is without a mind (self or soul); the physical condition of that person simply indicates that the physical brain - physical body - is unable to respond to the gentle prodding of the metaphysical mind.

At least some progress. The body serves the whole man, it allows the soul to fill it and make it a living, functioning thing. God did not make just bodies, he did not make just souls, he created human beings. Our souls are the substantial forms of the whole man, the physical, intellectual, and the spritual. The soul governs every thing in man.

You cannot separate one from the other. We walk, act, live, think, pray, etc as men, not as bodies or as souls. So the body effects the intellectual and spiritual powers of the soul, but the soul must have the body to exercise these powers.

Thank you very much for your post. This relationship seems however bidirectional. Once a person is in coma he/she cannot remember things, feel things, dreams, etc so what really happen for his/her self? It seems to me that self cannot do its functioning without a body.

Thank you very much for your post. But what happen for angels who are just made of spiritual substance namely soul? How they could function, think, etc.

I really haven’t given any time to studying the nature of Angels since their existence cannot be determined philosophically. However, Thomas Aquinas says a lot about them ( you can look that up in the Summa Theologica if you want.)

But off the cuff I would say that since God creates Angels, he has placed in their essences the parameters of their power and operations. Their essence is their nature, just as our soul is the grounds of our nature.

Do you believe that any spiritual substance in principal could work with any body?

Not sure what you are asking. The human soul is a spritual substance and it works with a body. Or are you asking " could an Angel " work with a body? " And the answer is no. An Angel can assume the form of a body but is not a functioning real body. It is merely matter that the Angel has molded to resemble a body and mimic its activities. The reason is that the form of an Angel is not meant to be the form of a body.

On the other hand the Second Person of the Trinity assumed a human nature, body and soul.

That is all I know.
