I thought I would start a new thread regarding the Prophecies on the birth of Jesus.

Include your favorite scripture passage, I have many. However, what I find incredible was the fact that three magi traveled a great distance from another country to see the child. How far did these prophecies extend?

Reading from scripture the passage that stays in my mind was, “The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him”

Several of the readings during Advent is from the book of Isaiah so all you have to do is to start reading.

So I will begin with one of my favorites from Isaiah:

“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
Isaiah 2:1- 5

The incomprehensible and inexplicable Nativity of Christ came to pass when Herod the Great was reigning in Judea; the latter was an Ascalonite on his fathers’s side and an Idumean on his mother’s. He was in every way foreign to the royal line of David; rather, he had received his authority from the Roman emperors, and had ruled tyrannically over the Jewish people for some thirty-three years. The tribe of Judah, which had reigned of old, was deprived of its rights and stripped of all rule and authority. Such was the condition of the Jews when the awaited Messiah was born, and truly thus was fulfilled the prophecy which the Patriarch Jacob had spoken 1,807 years before: “A ruler shall not fail from Judah, nor a prince from his loins, until there come the things stored up for him; and he is the expectation of the nations” (Gen.49:10).

Landau, who teaches in the Religious Studies program at the University of Oklahoma, translated the text from Syriac and published it in his book, “The Revelations of the Magi: The Lost Tale of the Wise Men’s Journey to Bethlehem.”

The ancient text’s original author is still unknown, although it is written from the point of view of the Magi themselves. Landau tracked it down in the Vatican archives and believes it is about 1,700 years old.

“It’s an incredibly grand story,” Landau said. “So who the Magi are in this text is, they are descendants of Adam and Eve’s third son, Seth. They live in this far eastern land. The text calls the land ‘Shir’ and from other ancient texts, it seems like the place it had in mind is the land of China.”

In the “Revelation of the Magi,” Landau said, the Star of Bethlehem not only led the Wise Men, but actually became the Christ child.

“The cave is filled with light,” Landau said, describing the transcribed text. “They’re kind of hesitant about this, but eventually the star…its light concentrates and reveals the small luminous human being…a star child, if you will…it’s Christ.”

At the Temple, the family is approached by a man named Simeon, who has been told by the Holy Spirit that he will not die until he has seen the messiah. (The same Spirit told him to go to the Temple that day, too.) Simeon takes Jesus in his arms and praises God: “Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel” (Luke 2:28–32). Having seen the messiah, Simeon is now prepared to die.

Ancient historians tell us that the Egyptian pharaoh Ptolemy II Philadelphus (285-247 B.C.) wished to include texts of Holy Scripture in the famous Library at Alexandria. He invited scholars from Jerusalem, and the Sanhedrin sent their wise men. The Righteous Simeon was one of the seventy scholars who came to Alexandria to translate the Holy Scriptures into Greek. The completed work was called “The Septuagint,” and is the version of the Old Testament used by the Orthodox Church.

Saint Simeon was translating a book of the Prophet Isaiah, and read the words: “Behold, a virgin shall conceive in the womb, and shall bring forth a Son” (Is 7:14). He thought that “virgin” was inaccurate, and he wanted to correct the text to read “woman.” At that moment an angel appeared to him and held back his hand saying, “You shall see these words fulfilled. You shall not die until you behold Christ the Lord born of a pure and spotless Virgin.”

From this day, Saint Simeon lived in expectation of the Promised Messiah. One day, the righteous Elder received a revelation from the Holy Spirit, and came to the Temple. It was on the very day (the fortieth after the Birth of Christ) when the All-Pure Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph had come to the Temple in order to perform the ritual prescribed by Jewish Law.

When Saint Simeon beheld their arrival, the Holy Spirit revealed to him that the divine Child held by the All-Pure Virgin Mary was the Promised Messiah, the Savior of the world. The Elder took the Child in his arms and said, “Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace, according to Thy word, for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation, which Thou hast prepared before the face of all people, a light to enlighten the Gentiles, and the glory of Thy people Israel” (Luke 2:29-32).

Yet here is something still more marvelous and edifying: “Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart.” And furthermore, “his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him.” (Luke 2:19

Personally, what I find to be interesting is that the Zoroastrian Scriptures predict the birth of Jesus Christ
The DENKARD is a ninth century encyclopedia of the Zoroastrian religion, but with extensive quotes from materials thousands of years older, including (otherwise) lost Avestan texts. It is the single most valuable source of information on this religion aside from the Avesta.
http://www.avesta.org/denkard/denkard.htm

The most explicit prophecy is in Book 7 of the Denkard, Chapter 10, verses 15 to 19
  1. And when thirty winters of the tenth century are unelapsed, that maiden, who is Gobak-abu, walks up to the water; she that is the mother of that testifying Soshyant who is the guide to conveying away the opposition of the destroyer, and her former lineage is from Vohu-roko-i Frahanyan in the family of Isadvastar, the son of Zartosht that is brought forth by Arang.
  2. ‘That maiden whose title is All-overpowerer is thus all-overpowering, because through giving birth she brings forth him who overpowers all, both the affliction owing to demons, and also that owing to mankind.’
  3. Then she sits in that water, when she is fifteen years old, and it introduces into the girl him ‘whose name is the Triumphant Benefiter, and his title is the Body-maker; such a benefiter as benefits (savinedo) the whole embodied existence, and such a body-maker alike possessing body and possessing life, as petitions about the disturbance of the embodied existences and mankind.’
  4. Not before that has she associated with men; nor yet afterwards, when she becomes pregnant, has she done so before the time when she gives birth.
  5. When that man becomes thirty years old, the sun stands still in the zenith of the sky for the duration of thirty days and nights, and it arrives again at that place where it was appointed by allotment.

I think that this answers your question: How far did these prophecies extend?

It also explains why the three Magi, who were Zoroastrians, were expecting Our Lord Jesus Christ to be born of the Perpetual Virgin and Mother of God Mary and were willing to travel a great distance from another country to see the child.

“Princes will come out of Kemet; Ethiopia shall quickly stretch out her hands to God.” Psalms 68…

Reference

In any case, all these lands are located in the East; border one another; and are plentiful in gold, frankincense, spices, and perfumes. Their inhabitants were devotees of soothsaying and stargazing, and the scholars living there knew the prophecy of Balaam concerning the star that would appear. His prediction was passed down from generation to generation, both by word of mouth and in books. It is likely that one of the Wise Men came from Persia, another from Arabia, and the third from Ethiopia, because this opinion agrees with David’s prophecy: “The kings of Tharsis and the islands shall bring gifts, kings of the Arabians and of Saba shall bring presents” (Psalm 11). According to the commentators on Sacred Scripture, this passage refers to the Magi. By “kings of Tharsis” (which means “beyond the sea”), David refers to Persia, which is beyond the Persian Gulf. The allusion to Arabia is plain enough, while “Saba” is another name for Ethiopia, and also the name of that country’s capital.

Since these prophecies were handed down from one generation to the next, I take it as they didn’t know the exact generation that the Messiah would come. Even though, we have prophecy to tell us of the coming of the Messiah (or even within the Exodus, a deliverer) - the fulfillment is never really known which makes that passages out of scripture from the Wise men to Righteous Simeon and Anna so enriched!

Habakkuk 2:3

For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.

Brant Pitre’s book Jesus and the Jewish Roots of Mary seems to have a good listing of prophecies that were fulfilled, along with those that especially pertained to Mary.

In the Cave of Treasures (a Syriac Christian text dated from the 4th–6th centuries), for example, all of the particular circumstances of the Hebrew Bible narratives fade away in the light of Christ. The Garden of Eden becomes the Church; Noah carries “gold, myrrh, and frankincense” with him in the ark, “treasures” from the Garden that will one day be offered to the infant Jesus.

During the advent season we light each candle from the previous one to show how our light inside affects each other. The amazing thing is that it starts with only “one” light and it passes to the next.

As the Light of Christ illuminates our hearts and clears our minds. We have the ability with God’s help to turn those who are mere passive receptacles of life’s events into active agents of Jesus Christ. We can empower the powerless to conquer the darkness snd guide the guileless, liberate those in despair, and encourage the half-hearted.

First, as Christ brings that light/flame into our own lives, like lighting the first candle, we ask that He come into our own hearts so then we can go out and bring that same light to others!

Wishing a Merry and Joyful Christmas to all!

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. James 1:17

The fifth candle (white) “CHRIST CANDLE” signifies the embodiment, the heart, and meaning of the season, God providing light to the world. Its position is in the center as Christ’s light is center and luminous. This tells us that Jesus is the immaculate Lamb of God, sent to wash away our sins! (Wreaths with only 4 candles, have the Christ Candle among the ring of other candles)

I’m going to put on my headset and listen to the music. And then I’m going to fall asleep in peace. Beautiful Thank you!

i listened to some videos on Father Andrew Younan and read up about the Maronite Catholic community. They have s strong prayer, The Lord’s prayer that I listened to over the weekend and thought it was very similiar to the Orthodox prayer, yet it was in Aramaic and english.

Really good - the name Jesus is Saviour Yashua Msheekha.

A daily discipline of prayer of praying the Holy offices-hours of prayer is so very, very important to us as true Apostolic Christians as our lives then center around our Lord,God and Saviour Yashua Msheekha as its nucleus as well as other prayer throughout the day. Also,as we are instructed by the Lord to pray without ceasing, the repetition of the Jesus prayer is a very beautiful, humble and spiritually enlightening experience which together with the other forms of prayer deepens and enriches our spiritual lives and brings us ever closer to Almighty MarYah the Father,Alaha the Son,and Alaha the Ruach Ha Kodesh. The Jesus prayer is very common in Oriental and Eastern Orthodox prayer and spiritual life. The prayer is-Lord Jesus Christ,Son of God,have mercy on me a sinner. One closes their eyes and focuses on the heart and prays the first part of the prayer-Lord Jesus Christ,Son of God while inhaling, then prays the second half, have mercy on me a sinner while exhaling.I pray it in Aramaic as the Aramaic carries with it deeper nuances.I translated it and had 2 Syrian Maronite priests I know verify that is is correct.-“Moran Yashua Msheekha Bar Alaha Rehiem Ano Hatoyeh”.Within this short but profound prayer our entire faith is contained. This is prayed very much by monastics-monks and sisters in the Orthodox churches. It is to be prayed at all times when the other services of prayers and other prayers and scriptural study, reading of the Fathers and Saints, ect are not being celebrated. It is traditional to use what is called a chotki which is a prayer rope usually made by monks or nuns from wool where a given number of knots are woven using a series of crosses wile weaving each knot.
