The Purpose of Animals

Depends on where they fall on the food chain…if animals didn’t eat each other, they would all starve eventally. Likewise, we have disturbed the natural food chain, so now it’s almost our duty to help keep populations in check by eating some!

We are just keeping things running smoothly!
Yea, some species have gotten totally out of control because we’ve screwed things up so badly. Asian carp, God help us if they get into the Great Lakes. Deer in Midwest are being culled by civil authorities. The wild boar in Texas are running rampant. Lord have mercy on us.

I think animals have souls. Is that biblical? I

Great question.

According to the catechism, animals have material souls. It’s enough to animate them and give them the ability to interact with outside stimulus but do not have the burden/gift of an eternal soul that will be subject to judgment.

Good for you, you are avoiding harming them when it’s not a necessity and you can be healthy and, all the vitamins can be found in plants or plant made food, God didn’t create them, in fact if there is any god he must be evil for creating prey and predators, and suffering, but still humans don’t need to eat any animals.
I believe God created us all but I do not beleive in a literal interpretation of Genesis nor the “fall”. So how do I account for prey and predators? Well seeing as we somehow evolved from the darkness of inconscient mud, even bacteriophage has come a long, long way. We are still coming out of the darkness of selfishness. That was part of the salvific example of Christ: self sacrifice for love of others.

I think animals are just amazing. It’s quite secondary that I happen to eat a few of them to get my protein. Animals are most definitely evidence of God’s Creative Artistry. I go through the university most every day on my bike which has perhaps just short of a billion squirrels habitating rent free in all the deciduous trees that can be found there. I never take them for granted. Each silly one makes me smile. it’s just so hard to keep all their names straight. Individual facial characteristics are quite subtle.

Watch a bit of David Attenborough. It’s the food chain, and we are not on top.

The cruelty and inhumanity of man has led to great suffering in the animal world. I won’t list them, but we are all informed of certain issues, and become incomprehensible at others.

What God provides, man is good at destroying, as always.

And this seems quite right to me. Animals do not commit sins. They operate on instinct and on behaviors that have evolved over time to help them and their species survive. God would not send any animal to Hell, as they lack the ability to choose right or wrong. They just choose survival.

Well, what if we eat tuna fish?

Or lambs?

People have been catching fish for thousands of years.

Even Jesus caught a bunch of fish and barbecued them while He was waiting for his friends.

Oh, yeah … the wild boar … pigs / hogs … in almost every part of the United States.

Lots of animals that are not local.

But have been introduced and have grown exponentially.

Nutria.

All kinds.

Snakes in Florida.

Perhaps this quote from Catechism of the Catholic Church may be helpful:

"Respect for the integrity of creation

2415 The seventh commandment enjoins respect for the integrity of creation. Animals, like plants and inanimate beings, are by nature destined for the common good of past, present, and future humanity.195 Use of the mineral, vegetable, and animal resources of the universe cannot be divorced from respect for moral imperatives. Man’s dominion over inanimate and other living beings granted by the Creator is not absolute; it is limited by concern for the quality of life of his neighbor, including generations to come; it requires a religious respect for the integrity of creation.196

2416 Animals are God’s creatures. He surrounds them with his providential care. By their mere existence they bless him and give him glory.197 Thus men owe them kindness. We should recall the gentleness with which saints like St. Francis of Assisi or St. Philip Neri treated animals.

2417 God entrusted animals to the stewardship of those whom he created in his own image.198 Hence it is legitimate to use animals for food and clothing. They may be domesticated to help man in his work and leisure. Medical and scientific experimentation on animals is a morally acceptable practice if it remains within reasonable limits and contributes to caring for or saving human lives.

2418 It is contrary to human dignity to cause animals to suffer or die needlessly. It is likewise unworthy to spend money on them that should as a priority go to the relief of human misery. One can love animals; one should not direct to them the affection due only to persons."

There may be animals in heaven. But I doubt very much that my dead dog will be there. It’s simply not the nature of animal souls to have an immortal existence.
How do you know that? Sounds like theory we have no business speculating.

Well, we have understood from the Holy See via the catechism that animals have material souls and do not go to Heaven or merit salvation. That said, many saints and theologians have speculated that God may restore our pets to us in order to show His glory in the full splendor of Heaven

Thanks for posting. This catechism passage on animals Is really good I think.

And just so everyone knows… Osprey are very unsavory, so don’t go there! Fish, on the other hand, can be quite tasty sometimes.

Well I found something even more disturbing than speculation on the nature of animal souls

“358 God created everything for man, but man in turn was created to serve and love God and to offer all creation back to him.”

"Everything for man? So if there is life out there in the far away galaxy it was created for man? I don think so.

It seems to me that we (even the Church) try to give answers to questions that are beyond us.

Psalm 131

LORD, my heart is not proud;
nor are my eyes haughty.
I do not busy myself with great matters,
with things too sublime for me.

Rather, I have stilled my soul,
Like a weaned child to its mother,
weaned is my soul.

Israel, hope in the LORD,
now and forever.
