The Raccolta

I just received a copy of the Raccolta in the mail, and I have been reading up on it in the mail. I find some of it (the concept of indulgences and how the prayers are supposed to be recited in the act of an indulgence) hard to figure out. I know that when it comes to indulgences and the freeing of souls from Purgatory, that it is ultimately up to God when a soul is completely cleansed. I would just like some help on how this manual can be of used to me in my personal prayer life.

Talk to a spiritual director or your pastor about how to incorporate such prayers into your spiritual life. That would be your best bet.

The Raccolta is a valuable prayer book and you should definitely keep and use it, but the indulgences are no longer in effect as they have been superseded by the current Enchiridion of Indulgences. It’s quite likely many of the prayers are still indulgenced but perhaps no longer exactly as stated in the Raccolta (e.g. what may have been plenary may now be partial or vice versa, and we no longer reckon indulgences by units of time, e.g. 500 days, 7 years, etc.).

I still find the concept of indulgences very confusing, especially when parish life tends to make little to no mention of such things and research is done individually.

Think of it this way… every sin is a crime, every crime has punishment due in the court of Justice.

Now think about you being sentenced to 100 lashes with a cane for some crime. But then, someone else steps in, and takes those lashes instead for your sake.

That’s an indulgence. Some saint, in Christ Our Lord, has already suffered sufficiently to do the penance due the sin. Through your prayers, God and the Church are so pleased as to substitute for your penance due, the penance of another.

There’s a good book by Rev. F.X. Schouppe, S.J. called ‘Purgatory’, very worth buying to own or reading online that shows how much the holy souls need our help. So, when one prays indulgenced prayers one is doing very good work for the sake of holy charity!

Interesting. So the current up-to-date listing of indulgences is the Enchiridion of Indulgences?
