Why would God ask for the stone to be removed from the cave before bringing Lazarus back from the dead? Or do I just have an odd version of the Bible?

In the story (John 11) in the NAB, Jesus tells the onlookers to remove the stone in Verse 39. The tomb itself had been sealed shut by the stone. Had he not had it removed, Lazarus would have walked right into it when exiting the tomb :o

In a deeper look, Martha mentions that there will be a stench if they remove the stone. Jesus says “Did I not tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?” They then remove the stone, most likely with Martha’s permission. Perhaps Jesus was reminding Martha to have faith in Him.

Did you ever notice that God usually asks man to assist in his mighty miracles… Moses was to hold the rod overt the Red Sea, God could have parted the sea without the stretching out of the rod. Mary told the stewards at the wedding “Do whatever he tells you”. I don’t think God needs a helping hand, I think it makes for a bonding relationship.

Have you ever seen a Dad ask his 4 year old son for help? Does Dad really need that help? Dad needs to build a relationship with his son… God wants to build a relationship with his people (or Church)

Awesome!!

Also, Jesus was not a wizard. He did not go for cheap theatrics. I’m sure that the Creator of the universe could have waved His mighty hand and the rock would have flown away but there would be a certain lack of humility in such an act. Besides, which is a greater event; moving a stone without touching it or bringing a dead man back to life?

I just found it odd that he could bring someone back to life but couldn’t move a stone? Will B. put it in the perfect context for me.
