Many Christians beleive in the Rapture. The linked video is making the rounds as one example.

Is there a basis for this in the Bible? It seems there might be. I’ve read both sides - including the Rapture Trap - and am not sure. A Catholic friend told me its a modern day form of Gnosticism. I’m not so sure. Another catholic friend beleives in it. is there a way to reconcile the Rapture to Catholic teachings?

The usual “proof text” is 1 Thessalonians 4.

The idea has nothing Gnostic about it

So Catholics can embrace it?
1 Thes 4:13-17 refers to what will happen at the end of time. All it is saying is that when Christ comes again, Christians that are then alive will be taken up to meet the Lord. That’s all it means.

It does NOT teach a “pre-tribulation, pre-millennial secret Rapture” as taught in the “Left Behind” junk novels and others that hold this theology. And no, Catholics are not allowed to believe in it. Here’s what the Church DOES teach:

When each of us dies, our souls are immediately taken to the presence of God and judged. This is called the Particular Judgment. At this point we begin our eternal destiny. If we are going to hell, our souls go directly there. If we are deemed worthy of heaven, our souls will go directly to heaven, or if we are going to heaven but are in need of purification, we may go to Purgatory first for a while (everyone in Purgatory will eventually go to heaven). Whatever our fate, our souls will stay there (heaven or hell) until the end of time, at which time the Second Coming will occur.

At the Second Coming at the end of time, those Christians still alive and who are in a state of sanctifying grace will be taken to heaven (what some Protestants think of as of the rapture). Then will occur the General Judgment. At that time the souls of the living and the dead will be reunited with their bodies and brought together in God’s presence and judged before all. Those who have already been judged in the Particular Judgment will be brought from wherever their souls were -heaven, hell or Purgatory-- and have their judgment confirmed before all, so that both the justice and mercy of God will be manifest to all.

After this, time and Purgatory will be no more and all will enter with their souls and bodies into their eternal destiny, either hell or heaven.

This is an extremely bare-bones sketch, so if you want to get the details, see the five articles I linked below:

In addition, you have to learn to recognize erroneous teachings about the End Times popularized by fundamentalists. In other words, toss out the “Left Behind” and “Late, Great Planet Earth” baloney. Here are some resources to help you develop some discernment in these areas:

I’ll give you the short answer. The Rapture is not consistant with Catholic Teachings. The long version is too complicated to acurately put in here.I would recommend the following books if you are really interested in the subject. Have read all four of these and feel they are good.

Will Catholics Be Left Behind - Carl Olson
The Rapture Trap - Paul Thigpen
What Dose The Bible Say About The End Times - William Kurz
Trial, Tribulation & Triumph - Desmond Birch

Also “The Lamb’s Supper” by Scott Hahn is worth reading.

Am currently involved in a Bible Study by Jeff Cavins on Revelation and would recommend it if you have the opportunity.

I think the theology that concludes a rapture is called gnostic because it springs from enterpretation based on personal opinion. That in it’self is fundamentally gnostic. Gnostic scripture is founded on private revelation. Gnostics believe to find the true self is to find God. The Apostles teach that the true self can only be known through God witnessed externally. John’s Gospel attacks gnosticism when he writes about God having become ‘tangible’ visible’. So the idea of the rapture as protestants envision fits that gnostic characteristic.

So does this mean and what your tryiong to say is that this so-called teaching of The Rapture seems to be linked to “Gnosticism” because you allude to the fact that it has no intent on a “Bodily Resurrection” but a spiritual one? Because the Evangelical teaching is clearly (Now i do not accept The Rapture by any stretch) that The rapture "takes out from this earth the actual total person, which seems to employ the fact that this is The Whole person with a body, so how do you see this as drifting into Gnosticism? Thank you

The rapture is an odd interpretation of the Bible held by a very small percentage of Protestants.
If only that were true. Mainline Protestants don’t accept it, but it is by far the prevailing view among Evangelicals. That’s why the Left Behind book series is so popular, along with all of the other literature, television, etc., that deals with it.

I don’t believe it’s Gnostic. Gnosticism implies a “secret knowledge” (gnosis) that only a select few have. There is nothing secret about the dispensationalist view of biblical prophecy. Those who believe in it are more than happy to share everything they “know” with you.

My opinion is that it arises from the same desire that Adventism arose from. People want to make sense of the world around them, and for some, simply trusting God without knowing every detail of His plan just doesn’t cut it. Dispensationalism and Adventism assign a meaning to almost every significant event on the front page of the newspaper, and that’s very appealing to people. Unfortunately, these teachings “leave the Bible behind.”

When I read this passage for the first time, my immediate understanding was exactly what Fidelis said.

The rapture is another “feel good” theory. It is the false assumption for an easy ride not to have to live through the horrors an trials of a tribulation period.

not sure if you are addressing my post. If so, what I meant had to do with the way revelation is received not what is necessarily revealed. If the revelation is built on enterpretations of Sacred Scripture that are based on popular opinion rather on what has been handed down from the Apostolic Witness then it’s comparable to the gnostic private revelations of the Christ event.

Benadem – Yes, in fact i was responding to your post… I find your piece a bit hard to swallow. Being a Chicago area priest I shouldn’t have such a hard time understanding, but i still don’t see your connection with The Way The Rapture is believed by Evangelicals some of whom are friends of mine and the connection you make with Gnosticism.

I mean, any Revelation by your standard that is Oustide The Confines of The Catholic Church is “Gnostic” and i don’t think your going that route, so what are you actually trying to say about it (The Rapture and Gnosticism?). I will humble myself in hoping to understand your point more. 🙂

Father, maybe if I use life experience to demonstrate a symptom I believe a gnostic illness causes. It’s not exclusive to sola scriptura but rare in those who submit to Apostolic Authority. When disagreed with about the meaning of scripture a person who mistakes their ego for God will say " don’t you believe the Word of God? I would write more Fathe but I’m out of time. Pax Christi

I kinda am Father, and we are discussing a revelation of Christ when referring to gnosticism. But I’m not saying protestant theology is necessarily gnostic and in no way ‘outside’ in the degree that the gnostics were.

I’ll begin by describing the view of gnosticism that leads me to believe that the Rapture is theology influenced by gnosticism.

A fundamental view of the early gnostic christian movement was that God is revealed* internally*.

In direct opposition;

A fundamental view of the early Church is that God is revealed externally*.*

The Apostles taught that our true selves are hopelessly lost without the external revelation of who we are in Christ. Christ reveals man to himself. The Christ event can only be understood by those who were intimate witnesses of it chosen by Christ Himslef. So Divine revelation is gnosis from without and is internalized and the lost true self is found by God.

Gnosticism teaches there is no need for an external witness because the true meaning of the Christ event can only be understood through the true self from within that only those who are their true selves can receive and those initiated to that ‘secret’ kind of knowing can accept. God once lost is found by the true self

That is why St John’s Gospel begins with apologetics defending the authority of the external witness of God. Also why he said the anti-christ spirit would claim that God did not really come in the flesh.

I do believe protestant methods are subject to gnostic tendencies and result in a kind of thinking that is a sublime reflection of gnostic thought. I don’t believe that protestants are gnostics or that what they believe is gnostic in it’s original form.

That said I see these comparisons.

The original gnostics were reinventing the events of Christ’s life in order to redefine what was Divinely revealed by the Apostolic Witness.

The methods of protestantism are re-inventing the tradition of beliefs that developed from that same Apostolic Witness of Divine Revelation.

The gnostics denied the necessity of a tangible, physical witness of God to receive divine revelation.

Protestants deny the necessity of a community that is tangibly, physically and historically a Witness of God to enterpret divine revelation.

The present and most obvious IMHO comparison is the denial of Apostolic Authority by the claim that it belongs to those who experience the interior *gnosis *received by the Holy Spirit and all external gnosis must submit to the judgement of God found internally, within the heart of the believer.

Father, isn’t that a reasonable eneogh comparison to support the claim that theology developed by that means is at least in degree gnostic?

The tendencies of a sola scriptura theology results in a denial of the same doctrins that the gnostics denied, a denial of the external examples of divine life developed and expressed in Sacred Tradition.

Finally The most profound IMHO comparison:

Gnostics deny that God became a tangible, physical, fully human fully divine person in the flesh on earth.

Protestant theology denies that Jesus becomes a tangible, physical, fully human fully divine person in the flesh on earth.

Very good explanation. I appreciate it. Most definitely I would agree that Protestantism in general that runs away from mysteries like The Eucharist, even, because they cannot explain it or find the “Sense or Smell” of it they don’t believe in it. Yet they accept the Rapture and things that are removed from our eye sight and in that way they grow very close to The Gnosts…(Gnosis).

Yes, I most definitiley agree with your fine assessment. Sorry it took you so long for me to get it. I am only a man…lol… Unfortunately even priests need some help in understanding the inner workings of The Spirit and Truth of our Faith. Thank you!
