As far as the comments about Sungenis goes… Sungenis is offering $1,000. This is substantially less than $100,000. Looking at his Science Dialogs, it also appears that he responds to every attempt.

Well, I’ve been reading over the contest, and it’s a shame to see it’s closed. I don’t think I could begin to tackle it without picking things bit by bit, and being exposed to every text related on the issues at hand inside the contest. It’s certainly interesting what he has asked, really, but I’m a bit confused.

“Tell us how you came to decide that Rome was the “true” church without engaging in the very private judgment that Rome condemns as illegitimate.”

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t he basically asking someone to prove why they believe something that they have faith in, when faith cannot always be proven? As in, we believe and have faith that the RCC is the true church - and he’s asking us to prove our faith in essence, without resorting to a faith-based answer?

If that is the case, and I’m not misunderstanding that, isn’t that just a wee bit impossible? If all one has to go on is that they woke up one day and believed fully in their heart that the RCC was the True Church, and there was no other “convincing” needed, wouldn’t that be an invalid answer according to him, even though it’s a perfectly valid answer to many other people?

But, even through all that, I know I wouldn’t be able to answer any of it without tripping myself up. I pray that I’ll be blessed to become learned enough to be able to prove my faith proper to someone who is as debate-loving as he is. He’ll certainly make you think, alright.

Della…it all starts with scripture whether you want to believe this or not…there are no outs…It’s elitist, and highly offensive to claim that someone doesn’t understand srcipture or interprets it incorrectly because they are “protestant”…you’re right it is the great divide…and it is a shame. That’s kind of like using god as an excuse…and you’re also making some judgments…
It has already been noted in this thread that Scripture is part of it. Since you mention shame, are you willing to risk studying the culture and religion which accompanied the Scripture at the time of Jesus and the Apostles? Is is worth your time to know what the honor verses shame culture of the Hebrews was about? I am not referring to that which is known as honor/shame in Arabic countries now, but in Christ’s time.

Scripture, Tradition, the men entrusted by Jesus, and the very culture from which they came all work together. Anyone who isn’t going to recognize this has automatically limited himself, and definitely will miss the sort of things which demonstrate, for example, the primacy of Peter.

Unexcusedly,
Tabitha
who knows how this stuff generally goes.

Catholic Dude:
ITs a joke, nobody has that kind of money to pay, nor would anyone pay it, Your right on jaz, its a hoax. Its no different than an typical pop the lid and win $1M games on foods. Dont waste you time trying to get paid.

It might be worthwhile if there were an independent referee to adjudicate - or even a board of referees: including (say) a Catholic, a Protestant, and A.N. Other(s)

But adjudication would be impossible, without rules of evidence acceptable both to Mr. Svendsen, and to his “challengers” - otherwise there would far too much room for disagreement as to whether he had been adequately answered; and for plenty of ill-feeling

None of this should be impossible to arrange. ##
