This morning, on social media, I was asked to sign a petition to stop the airing of this new sit-com. Of course, Huffington Post and other sources are claiming it as funny, and only offensive because of one gay character. However, when the trailer is viewed. It is offensively anti-Catholic (in my opinion) and anti-family. I’m attaching a link to the trailer. Please let me know what you think

I have already seen the trailer. I think it’s just awful. They should not be allowed to get away with this kind of thing.

The statue of the Blessed Virgin over the toilet is extremely offensive.

What if they removed the word “Catholic” and inserted the word “Muslim”? And instead of the statue of Mary, what if they put a statue of Mohammed over the toiled?

What would happen, I wonder…:hmmm::hmmm:

Allowed to? People can produce garbage if they want, it’s protected speech. Though the FCC may label it TV-MA or relegate it to cable if it crosses that line.

I’m just sad for the people who think it’s funny. The creator, Dan Savage, is a hateful man.

Want to share the link with my mom’s group, but I don’t want to give the show more publicity. Trying to see the humor in it, but just can’t.

I remember “Just the Ten of Us” and thought it was adorable. I was growing up in the South and didn’t know any Catholics; the show made me want to learn more about being Catholic.

I know episodic television dramatizes and shows exaggerations but… do you guys know any families remotely like this???
 
Is this a spin-off TV show of that Kathleen Turner movie? She was a big to-do in her parish and her son came out? Did I imagine that?

At any rate, this series is being touted as “real” and a “gay sitcom.” Great. I feel more damage control with my acquaintances and the need for more apologetics conversations. Or…maybe this can be a tool for evangelism. Am I being too optimistic? 🤷
 
It looks really stupid. ABC tries insulting us with sitcoms like this from time to time and they never make it past a few shows. The Catholic League will boycott this mess and it will quietly go away on it’s own. :sleep:
 
Unfortunately a lot of our popular entertainment these days is based on shock value, because the competition is so stiff with video games, social media, fantasy sports leagues, etc.

Was it just me or did that priest look more like an Episcopalian (i.e. how he dressed)? I can’t say specifically why but I wouldn’t have assumed he was a Catholic priest if the show didn’t make abundantly clear it was about a Catholic family.

(p.s. - the dad was Stan Rizzo from Mad Men).
 
Don’t know of it. Never heard of it. The filth and evil spread over the television networks (and in the majority of media outlets) is the reason for my ignorance of such programs and much of what is considered popular culture. Avoiding it brings me peace. Although I am certainly aware of its presence.
 
I usually have a pretty good sense of humor about things, but this crosses the line for me. The concept that the “good” Catholic family is 100% flawed but hiding it is offensive. Also it seems like they trot out every thing “Catholic” that they can, then make fun of it. And this is only the trailer… I shudder to think how the show will progress, especially with Dan Savage at the helm. :eek:

When I was an episcopalian maybe about 12 years ago there was a new show airing about an episcopal priest and his family and his parish. It starred Aidan Quinn. There were still enough conservative episcopalians around that found the show offensive and we were able to get it pulled off the air after 5 episodes or so. Hopefully, the same can be done with this show.
 
So, the creator of this “sit-com” is named “Savage?” Quite apropos?
 
i just watched the trailer and this is a very offensive show why do people think it is ok to make fun of Catholics, i have sent an email to the ABC.

Because we’re the only religious group left who will neither bend our knee to the secular ideologies dominating our age, nor attack them for their insults to even our most deeply-held beliefs.
 
We are the Church Militant. Christ Himself said we would be persecuted, no? Although we abhor such sacrilege and blasphemy, we should rejoice in knowing how it all ends. Pray for those who persecute our Lord and Our Church.
 
This show, created by atheist anti-Christian bigot Dan Savage, is patently offensive and Catholics everywhere need to flex their muscles and put an end to this. It perpetuates the types of stereotypes that would never be allowed if it was making fun of blacks, gays, women or any other “protected” group in the same way. But Christians are fair game, particularly Catholics. There’s nothing “real” about it. But those who are ignorant of the Faith will take it hook, line and sinker.

Let ABC know you don’t appreciate it on social media (Twitter, Facebook and Instagram especially) and then don’t watch it. The trailer is enough.

As long as we take this garbage lying down, it will continue to be “acceptable.” On the positive side, it has already led to some measure of Christian unity. There are Protestants who have expressed outrage as well.
