Many people think Protestants are called that because they protest the CAtholic Church, which is true, more or less, but the more specific reason is that, @ the time of Luther, the powers that be were trying to bring about peace between Prot & Catholics… The non-Catholics got upset wehn the government wanted to allow - or re-allow - the Catholic Mass to be said… :rolleyes:

The word Protestant is derived from the Latin protestatio meaning declaration which refers to the letter of protestation by Lutheran princes against the decision of the Diet of Speyer in 1529, which reaffirmed the edict of the Diet of Worms against the Reformation.[2] Since that time, the term Protestantism has been used in many different senses, often as a general term to refer to Western Christianity that is not subject to Papal authority.[2]

The imperial “Diet” (like Parliament) tried to force the Protestant rulers to re-institute the Mass in the state churches of their regions. Neither side was advocating a free religious economy of the kind that we have today, and therefore it’s easy to misrepresent what was going as a struggle for “religious freedom” on the part of the side with which one sympathizes most. I grew up being told that it was a protest against the persecution of Protestants–which it was. You are describing it as a protest against the toleration of Catholic worship–which it also was.

Your point that this was a political term and did not describe doctrinal dissent per se is absolutely right. That invalidates both the silly Catholic claim that Protestantism is condemned to be purely negative from its name alone, and the silly claim by adherents of later offshoots of Protestantism that since they are not personally “protesting” Catholicism they are not really Protestants.

Great points. Could you elaborate as to why you used the word “silly” in your final point?

In the original context, it meant

“I protest anyone interfering with my right as a local ruler to run the Church in my territory as I wish!”

Or in less cynical terms: “I protest being made to go against the Word of God by reinstating corrupt and idolatrous worship and turning back from the godly reforms I have instituted.”

Both arguments are silly because etymology is not theology, but bad etymology is particularly silly as a basis for theology!

Of course, bad etymology can give rise to good theology, as reams of patristic and medieval theology demonstrate!

Yes, i get tired of Protestants telling me they are not really Protestants. If they hate that word so much, you would think they would at least be interested in learning about what it is they are accused of protesting…

I don’t buy it that a person who loves Jesus (claims to) has no interest in the Catholic Church. To me (narrow minded as i am) to show no interest in the Church is to show no interest in Christ…

Some saint said that the Church is Christ.

…but she didn’t have to tell me twice…

Yeah… good point. I mean, what is silly about it?

“Protestant” IS a negative-sounding word…

Catholic means “universal” …

as per St. John 17:20, St. Matthew 28:18-20 (etc)… 🙂

TAN is the Jack Chick of Catholism.
They no longer publish some of the books they did 15 years ago but many, many of their books are nothing more than hate monkering.

BTW I challenge Catholics to read some of their books on Purgatory where the claim is that a ssul suffers torment and agony for an long extended periods of time for minor sins.

I have absolutely no trouble believing this because I am in “Purgatory” right now for the sins of my past… The Holy Spirit has revealed this to me… Sin causes far more damage to a person’s soul than any human fully realizes… & that “damage” or stain must be purged off before a soul can enter the perfect holiness of Heaven, where “No unclean thing will enter” (Revelation [21?])…

God wants us to do our Purgatory here on EArth… So i just deal with my pains… offer them up for conversions, expiation… purification…

So - are you Catholic?? If so, do you not believe in Purgatory??
