I just attended a “Red Mass” in San Diego. A “Red Mass” is a tradition that I was told dates back to the 1300s. It is a mass celebrated at the beginning of the year of “court” and is given to ask God’s blessing upon all who work in the legal profession. In the United States, it traditionally takes place in October, just prior to the beginning of the US Supreme Court’s legal year. The mass was very beautiful, and presided over by the bishop of the San Diego Diocese, Bishop Robert Brom. Four other priests attended. Anyone else out there attend a Red Mass in your community? Please share…

-Peace.

last year we hosted the Red Mass in our diocese, since we are a couple of blocks south of the county courthouse. the judges (in their robes) and lawyers walked in procession down the main street to the church for Mass, then reception in our parish hall, excellent speaker from a Catholic university law school. this week there is a Red Mass for lawyers and judges, and also a White Mass for health care professionals in this diocese.

For some reason this year our archdiocese is holding it in January. I’m a new member of the guild so I haven’t been to one yet.

The Red Mass is done in my Archdiocese, at St. Patrick’s Basilica downtown, but I hae never attended.
