"PROGRESSIVE CHRISTIANITY ON-LINE

Progressive Christianity is about re-assessing Christian faith in the light of contemporary life. We don’t look at the world in the same way as the people who wrote the Bible. In the Bible, the earth is pretty much flat and institutions such as slavery are tolerated. We need to re-visit Christianity in ways that are appropriate for our context. This is not about watering it down, but about being confronted and empowered in fresh ways by God’s liberating activity in our time."

It seems a bit strange to advertise Bible readings while stating that they don’t look at the world the same way as the people who wrote the bible.

I can’t see of anything substantial that came from the Protestant Deformation, other than it’s bringing in many souls into the Church now.

As of yet, I still can’t see much good coming from it, but I’m sure God can bring good out of it. 😉

I’ll just let the Chesterton quote below answer that.

Hold the phone here ya’ all ….

The fact is that none of us views the world the way any Biblical Author did. That’s just the way it is. If one is concerned about their faith and how it impacts their daily life aren’t you then “re-assessing [your]Christian faith in the light of contemporary life”?

Aren’t we always “re-visit[ing] Christianity in ways that are appropriate for our context”?

Isn’t that the point of walking out a Christian life? What good do you do anyone including yourself and God if you go to Church every day and still act like a jerk? Isn’t looking at where we were as a people and where we are and where we are going in light of the Cross of Christ exactly the point? Isn’t that crucial in our walk in holiness? Just because someone wants to place this idea under the label of “Progressive Christianity” doesn’t make it any less “Traditional Christianity” does it?

Just because an idea or sentiment comes from a “Progressive” source does not automatically disqualify the idea.

I think we’re condemning the act of changing doctrine, not applying doctrine already in place to comtemporary situations.

There have been cases in which a denomination condemned contraception but later allowed it.

dont understand thread title
link is to a very progressive, liberal non-Catholic denomination, and not about the Protestant Reformation, and nothing in the link or this thread traces a connection between the historic Reformation and this denomination, preaching non-Christian beliefs and values. to make this thread title work you are going to have to demonstrate a historic link.

What I can’t stomach is how you would blame everything such as this on the Reformation. You obviously haven’t done much homework on what the Reformation entailed. This Progressive Christian garbage come right from our feel good first society so stop blaming it on the Reformation.

Can we know for sure, if the Reformation never happened, that these progressive happenings wouldn’t have occured? We all know that the Reformation didn’t unite anyone.

I disagree with that.

I disagree with that.
The burden of proof is on you, my brother. To whom did the Reformation unite? I don’t see anything ultimately positive that’s come out of it. I don’t mean to sound pessimistic, but that’s the truth.

sorry still absolutely nothing to link a modern non-conformist site claiming to represent a denomination with the historical Reformation. until provided, pointless discussion and unhelpful title, it is not for us to disprove an unsubstantiated link, it is for the person who posted it to prove it.

puzzleannie you are correct there is nothing in the site to link it directly to a traditional reformation denomination. I also agree the the title of this thread could have been less condescending.

That said Because of the Reformation we have most of these sub-sects and off shoot of denomination that came directly from the the reformation. they have split and split again till some no longer resemble the denomination.

I have in my family members of the Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist, and a few other denominations. this can make for some really interesting and at time heated conversations at family gatherings.
The sin of the reformation ( this is no both sides of it) has be dividing the body of Christ for over 600 years. The biggest message it has ever taught is that if you disagree with anything being taught you can just go start your own church.😦 Luther had some legitimate points. But the pride of man in him and the church leaders of his refused to allow them to listen to one another with open hearts. Then Anglicans came to being all because one man decided that he could do what he wanted regardless of church teaching. And there are more. So though The title could have been better its correct in that out of the reformation some really wild ideas have come into being.

Hi

If some knowledgeable evangilizing Catholic friend, while discussing on “Jesus Second Coming” which is undoubtably mentioned in the scripturres with specific figurative years, persons, events; says that he does not belive in whitchcraft, story telling and science; the scriptures thus he has already left, the end result would be something you are astonished with!

This could be understandable.

Thanks

My 2 cents worth is that you will find some good in just about anything including the Reformation(s).

But overall i think it has not been so good. No matter which side of the fence you are with doctrines, i think the splitting of the Church has encouraged many to see religion as adversarial and extremely subjective. Some have left religion altogether because of this. It has also encouraged the secularist philosophy as a neutral compromise which then went on to have a life of its own and dominate our culture so that it is a rival to religious life.

I say that as a Catholic but acknowledging the deep faith and grace of my fellow Christians who are non Catholic and of whom i have a true respect.

I also think the title could be a little different.

This is just awful, I can’t believe that someone would believe that God’s word is changeable. I think they should reconsider their faith because that is not faith. I don’t think Martin Luther today would agree with this, in fact I think he would be ashamed.

“And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life” (Revelation 22:19)

Although this quote primarily refers to Revelation I think it can be applied to the entire Bible as well.
