The Relation between Indulging in Passions and Committing Sin

I recall Billy Graham once said that ANYTHING which comes before your love of G-d–even the pursuit of knowledge–can be regarded as sinful. In your religion, what is the relation between indulging in passions other than loving G-d and committing sin? Those passions may include such things as food, dieting, exercise, sports, learning, sex (in marriage), smoking, drinking, vacationing, traveling, hunting, cars, music, painting, collecting, work, television, movies, the Internet (CAF), technology, science, cell phones, politics, and so on.

Is is not indulging that is a sin. It is OVER-indulging that is a sin.

It is when it becomes a obsession with you that it becomes a sin. Like the easiest to compare is drinking. When you drink casual and can drimk a beer or two and stop it is not a sin.

But when you need it morning noon and night and it ruins your life it becomes a sin. Things like that.

In Orthodoxy, the passions are the vices (Pride, Anger, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Avarice, Sloth). Any indulging in the passions in synonymous with committing sin. The vices are a shortcoming of the virtues. Hope that helps.

All things in moderation. Restraint is key. If one is inclined toward any of the vices of Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, Pride, one should strive to battle and balance them with the applicable virtue of Chastity, Temperance, Charity, Diligence, Patience, Kindness, Humility.
