Have many read The Remnant newspaper (online or hard copy)?

If you have, some questions:

What are your opinions of what they print?
I see they are strong traditionalists, but are they unfaithful to the magesterium of the Catholic Church in any way?
Do they print or support anything that is contrary to the teaching of the Catholic Church?
Are there any bishops that support the publication (written or verbal)?

Thanks!

I read the Remnant but with a critical eye. I love Tradition but I’m careful about how I let it form my thinking. Any article you read, whether on the right or left, you have to be careful because they are often written in a vacuum. In other words, it might not be what they say but what they don’t say. I like to say that I’m Traditional organically. That is, I naturally gravitate to things historical and pure. I’m inspired by it. I have no axe to grind with the Church. Solange Hertz is a wonderful writer and I have read 8 of her books but she definitely shows a bias to the modern church. Nevertheless, she’s a wonderful writer if you like the old style of Catholic Writing. It’s beautiful. I mention her because she use to write for the Remnant. I’m not sure if she does now. I prefer the Latin Mass but, out of obedience and love for the Church, I keep a balance between it and the Novus Ordo. I attend both. The same with Vatican II. The Remnant and the Wanderer are produced by the same family - the Matt Family. The two Matt brothers split around 1968 due to differences in their views on Vatican II. Both magazines are considered traditional. I have been reading the Wanderer for about 20 years. Great Magazine! I think most would have difficulty keeping a balance reading the Remnant and accepting the modern church and, if you can’t, don’t read it. They are critical of the modern church but, ultimately, the Remnant is in the Church but on the extreme right. This has been my experience.

And what about the Wanderer? What are your opinions of that magazine in contrast to the Remnant?

The Wanderer - It’s just right to me. It’s traditional but just about right. I need to follow up on commenting on the Remnant. Actually, I quit reading the Remnant years ago but read their online articles. The Remnant had many wonderful articles in their magazine but also some very critical ones. That’s why I quit reading it. An example of a great article they wrote was one on the story of Pius IX. It ended up being a very long article with a part every 2 weeks for a couple of months. It was so beautiful! It was in the old traditional style and so, so beautiful! Solange Hertz wrote many wonderful articles too. She wrote one I think called “The Black Mass” which was about exorcisms and the history of those through the centuries that were enemies of the church. Wow! What insight and what beauty in her style of writing!

It’s not for the faint of heart. 😃
Indeed it’s not! 😛

The Wanderer is not on the opposite end of the spectrum at all. The Wanderer is very traditional as well, and it’s quite the read. I like them both, but The Wanderer has more news articles whereas The Remnant has more opinion pieces, stories, and commentary.

…the Wanderer also has Fr Z!

I asked the Remnant and the Wanderer to send me a few sample copies, as you can’t get either the Wanderer nor the Remnant here. They both obliged, only the Remnant came. I’m thinking the Wanderer got lost in the post as do things when you send them “across the pond” as thou sayst.

I heard Catholic Family News is a good traditional Catholic journal.

I read and enjoy the Remnant. They aren’t afraid to criticize when they feel something is wrong in the Church (and I tend to usually agree). I think a lot of people have problems with this because there is a mindset that any criticism of the Church is wrong, but I don’t hold to that. I think this is what the one poster meant by “it’s not for the faint of heart.” Some of the things might be shocking, especially to those who are familiar with just going along with whatever is the current trend. But hey, it’s like using a defibrillator! Sometimes a shock is needed to send you in the right direction.

I really like the Remnant. Yes, they are very strong traditionalists but they provide a nice counter-balance to the many wishy-washy modernist rags that are littering the landscape.

Why do you think obedience and love for the Church have anything to do with going to both TLM and NO?

I obey the laws of the Church and I never go to the Novus Ordo anymore. I will go to great lengths to go to a Traditional Mass or an Eastern Divine Liturgy.

(If these are truly not available, and I have an obligation, I’ll go to the NO … but this is clearly sufficient for obedience to the Church).

Why do you and others so obviously hold the OF in such distain? Can’t we all observe, and participate in the liturgies of the Church as right and just, as they are intended? I LOVE to see and experience the different facets, traditions and cultures within our faith.

I have my preferences, yes, but not the perceived utter distain some here show toward a particular approved liturgy of Holy Mother Church.

The answer is out there, Aaron but all NYC contends is that obedience doesn’t require us to attend all rites equally and he chooses not to. Seriously.

On topic:

I casually read their online editorials, and they’re interesting and I think they give voice to important concerns but sometimes their writer go beyond my comfort zone. I think by today’s standards they are obedient to the Church, given that they’re all laity as far as I know. There’s more to be concerned with in politically-left-learning Catholic papers.

I don’t think it’s disdain for one as much as it is preference for the other. I also attend the EF almost nearly exclusively now, but it’s solely out of preference. I love the OF; before moving, I served our local OF according to the mind of the Church and the Second Vatican Council. Had Father turned around to celebrate ad orientem, the typical non-Catholic would never have been able to distinguish it from an EF Mass other than the English in the readings. I gave it the works, Gregorian chant propers and ordinaries and all that.

I pray the Divine Office in the Ordinary Form, for me the greatest gift the Council gave to the laity.

If there’s any disdain on my part, it’s for the liberties people take with the Ordinary Form of the Mass such that the celebration departs from the mind of the Church, the Holy Father, the General Instruction and the Council.

No disdain in that post. I just know that I can love the Church, be obedient, and never go to the OF, and that’s ok. I take the view many FSSP priests or many ICKSP priests have. The Pope’s okay with my view, so I’m not sure why you should have an issue.

As to preference, well I do prefer the EF but I also think it’s objectively better. Not sure I can talk about why without violating forum rules. But I’ve heard in a few places on this forum that we have to consider both forms equally “good” and that it’s only preference … I disagree.

In another thread I asked for a source, but the other poster admitted he re-read SP and it’s not there.

EF and OF are both valid, both licit, but are they equal in terms of how they express what the Mass is? Is being more similar to the Mass throughout the 5th century or the 10th century or the 18th century a virtue of the EF and a deficiency in the OF? I think it’s ok as Catholics to ask such questions and have either view. I can’t say more here perhaps, but the forum here is aloud to restrict certain views, it’s their website. The Pope however doesn’t restrict this view.

FSSP priests and ICKSP priests generally feel the EF is superior, and they are not called heretics for it.

I have never read the Wanderer.

The Remnant publishes articles that are equally favorable to the FSSP, SSPX, ICK. They are likewise not sympathetic to sedevacantist theories and the conspiracies they tend to attract. I look forward to sitting down with a brandy (and cigar in season) and reading each new issue.

Catholic Family News is like the Remnant but more focused on and sympathetic to the SSPX in its editorial pieces. Each issue opens with a teaching from one of the Popes, usually concerning modernism and/or freemasonry. I equally look forward to CFN but I find that it somehow goes better with Amaretto Disaronno on the rocks. My son is a seminarian and he insists that CFN and a Cabernet is the right ticket.

LOL so what do you drink when reading this forum?

I would not recommend The Catholic Family News. It is owned and published by Fr. Nicholas Gruner, a priest who had been suspended of his priestly faculties and his appeal of that suspension was rejected by the highest Church court. In 2001, The Vatican congregation for clergy issued a reminder of Fr. Nicholas Gruner’s suspension.
