The Responsorial Psalm at MASS

I’ve been bit by the “chant” bug. Hard. This Sunday is the first Sunday in Lent that I’ve been on to play, and I am displeased with the setting of the Psalm in Gather. I was going to look to the Chabanel Project for a setting, but I decided that I have enough experience with chanting the Office and with attending the Liturgy (add to that a Music Ed degree and a gazillion years of experience in Pastoral Music) that I would write my own setting.

I have no idea where the melody for the Refrain came from. It popped into my head this afternoon at school, and during my study hall supervision found its way into Finale. I cannot find it anywhere, so I’m assuming it’s original to my own brain.

I am using the “Verse Melody Patterns for the Communion Hymn” (Letter C) from the Byzantine Metropolitan Cantor Institute as my base melody (had to lower the A to A-flat, but it works) for the verses (piano harmony concocted from my own ear).

It’s done, I like it, and I’m going to use it.

In the Offices and in the usage I pillaged from the East, the Psalms conclude with the Gloria Patri. I see no indication to include it with the Responsorial Psalm at Mass, but I see no restriction, although I’ve never heard it.

What say ye, CAF? Would it be appropriate to tack the Gloria Patri on as a final verse or not?

We are not supposed to add anything or take things away from the Mass and since the Gloria Patri is not included I don’t think we are supposed to take it upon ourselves to do so.

OTOH, we do add it to the Psalms at Evening Prayer. IIRC, we are instructed to do so in our Rite for the Liturgy of the Hours.
 
I don’t think the Gradual (which is in the place of the Responsorial Psalm in the E.F.) has a Gloria Patri at the end, so I would probably suggest not adding it to the Psalm. It’s used for the Introit, but not for the Gradual.
 
While the Gloria Patri has its place in the Divine Office, it is not used in the Responsorial Psalm. Therefore, you should not add it.

If it would be incorrect to add it, I won’t. I’m just really excited that I was able to put a setting together with my own (I hope) melody.
 
Just to follow up …

I completed my setting and my group used it this weekend. I forwarded it on to the Chabanel Project and they have it posted with all of the other settings they have compiled for the Fourth Sunday of Lent in Year B.

This was most enjoyable. I may have to do it again sometime.
