The resurgence of headcovering at Mass - why?

No, I am pretty young still. but i find this style beautifull. I don’t go to Church with pride of my style, i do what is necessary and to follow the custome of teh Church throughtout the ages. I know that many feel embarassed to wear conservative clothes and head coverings. But the Church is no place for people to show style of clothes. Like St Paul says, women should dress modestly in teh Church and have their heads covered. so, that is what I am doing. I am not saying everybody has to do it. Just that I do.

Just out of curiosity if you don’t mind, when did you start wearing a headcovering? Was it an immediate decision when you started attending Mass?

My first mass was an EF mass and I noticed some women were covered. This was familiar to me because in the Baptist church I grew up in the older ladies had mantillas on and they would bring extras for the young ladies. I for one, resisted wearing mantillas except when singing. But it was familiar to me.

I never thought American Catholic women wore such things.

I think I started wearing them about a month or two after first attending mass when I was finally able to find a place to buy one.
 
What do you use to cover your hair for modesty purposes? I often feel that I should be modest with my hair and feel comfortable covering it in a hat and I’ve also taken to wearing a snood(hairnet) I crocheted. The snood requires me to use bobby pins to hold it onto my head. It’s not horribly uncomfortable but my hair is very fine and breaks easily. I’ve been having hair loss issues in general. I’m thinking I want to try a rasta/African hair wrapping, but I’m a mixed race/Hispanic looking person with a Polish last name. I’m not sure if people will find it offensive or not.

What are your experiences?

Thanks. I’m really amazed that your first mass was EF. I think that is still unusual and most people go through OF first. I welcome the change 🙂

I have CAF and Youtube to thank for this. I saw people talking about the TLM, I found some beautiful masses on Youtube and searched for a latin mass in NYC. Thank God for the internet.

My experience, I don’t care what people thinks, I wear a head covering that is long and i usually a tie a knot to it. I am the only one who wears in teh Church, I hope that more women see the beauty and the humility on it. In obedience to what St Paul says, I do it. I am sure it pleases the Spirit of God when we obey the Apostles and the holy Saints of the Church. Rebellious in teh Church today, has taking roots but we don’t have to sucumbe to their desires. Obeying God is the main purpose for our Faith.

Later, I also attended the OF. I’m the type of person that likes to be well-rounded and understand things, so for about two weeks, I went to an OF daily mass. I’ve also attended a reverent OF about twice.

I needed to see the difference to understand what was best for me.

I always thought it was because Saint Paul stated it was required of woman to do so and men were not to do so? Where did the angels deal come from? I understand the love and reverence towards your Mother’s request (that is a very good thing), but where does it say that? That is the part I see with allot of Catholic families, these myths and things that have been passed down that have no Biblical or even Catholic doctrinal truth. Why don’t Catholics wish to research? Angels are great servants of God. Do I respect them, yes I do (the perfect servant/ never sinning, unlike me), but keep your eyes on the prize, JESUS.

+I live in a marvelous western state where there are plenty of “boot & saddle” stores that have lots of western items . . . and in particular western square scarves in many colors which work beautifully as daily head coverings . . . I just fold them into triangles, iron them flat and tie them behind my head . . . :byzsoc: . . . they wash up beautifully and when ironed with a little spray starch look good as new . . . I wear coordinated western scarves to church also . . . with more simple casual outfits . . . and keep a mantilla and chapel veil type scarf for more formal types of worship . . .

I don’t know if anyone would be offended. But if you would feel more comfortable there are other options for head coverings that don’t use bobby pins. A triangle scarf (or square folded in half) that ties behind the head can be very flattering. Or a snood with ties. Hats are also perfectly acceptable.

There is a group of ladies here who headcover call veiled in grace. forums.catholic-questions.org/group.php?groupid=496 They would be happy to give you tips, hints, and idea about how to keep your headcovering on without bobby pins.
 
I’m not feeling the lace. I dont have the cuteness factor required to pull that off without looking weird. I’m very tall and very big so I wouldn’t look like a modest maiden. I’d just look like I’m parading around with a curtain on my head. I’m sounding vain, I know but there’s just certain things that dont work on me that work with everybody else. Only thing I’ve seeing from those links I could get away with maybe are the opaque scarf and the cloche. I have tons of large cloches I’ve made for myself. So I dunno.
 
For any sort of religious services, I wear the tichel, an Israeli form of headscarf worn by a lot of Israeli women. It’s basically a tringular scarf which is first tied round the head tightly and then the spare point of the scarf is then tucked under the tie, forming a bandana shape. Then the ends of the knot which was used to tie the scarf to your head is then wrapped around the ‘bun’ which covers your ponytail to form a circular shape.

Vis-a-vis the African head wrap. Do you mean a gele? I think they are amongst the most stunning head gear out there. Were you going to invest in some, make sure you know how to care for and cean them; unfortunately, I can offer no suggestions in that area.
 
Okay, the posts were moved and now I cant see some of the posts I saw before. Arghhhh. This is a bad day to be confusing me so with post shuffles. I’m having dizzy spells.

I was overjoyed at my first EF Mass to ‘get to’ wear a mantilla. My husband has asked me not to wear one when I go to the OF Mass with him, so I always wear a hat. It is such a beautiful thing to wear one, I feel like I have privacy, my own little prayer chapel in a way (I wear a large rectangular mantilla). Our Chaplain put it well when he said that in the Church, we veil that which is precious to us, like the veiling of the Tabernacle. 🙂
