The Resurrection and "Time"

Hello all. This is a question I’ve been pondering for a bit recently, and I’ve yet to come up with a satisfactory answer.

After the second coming, when we are resurrected and regain our physical forms, will we also regain a sense of time?

I believe that we will. My reasoning for this is that time is a property of matter, which is a property of the “physical” universe. Since, after the resurrection, we will be regaining our physical forms, and therefore will return to existing within a physical reality, it stands to reason that we will also begin to experience “time” again.

What does everyone else think?

I think you’re correct in terms of the physics of it all. But, time is relative, to a certain extent. Time may not mean much to people at that point. Or it may mean something, but not in the same relevance that it does for us now.

The question I have is, can we have our resurrected bodies yet exist out of time? We aren’t making time “happen” just be being here on earth as we are now. Time exists because of matter, energy and gravity. I need to read up more on the resurrection. Thanks for your insightful remark!

You may have a point within your own discussion there, but one thing is for sure, the Lord God inhabits eternity and since His children will be with Him, time no matter what, isn’t an issue. As an adult time becomes critical and awareness thereof is constant, but when one was a child the only ones watching time was the parent, expect when a child was anticipating a desired thing or event then time toke to long.

The sons of God when manifested will have a body like Christ’s body, because it isn’t offensive in the Presence of God. And note Jesus the Son of God is still in it.

I hold that time is both physical and spiritual. I do not think we will “regain” a “sense of time,” as if to say that somehow in the act of dying we would lose it. Time passes, and we as intellectual beings notice it passing. Kant said time is the raw form of our interior awareness, i.e. we experience whatever reality we experience precisely as a succession of interior states.

If we could not experience time after dying, then what would be the point of teaching that Purgatory is temporal punishment? It seems, if we can spend days, weeks, months, or years in purgatory, we would be experiencing time.

Heaven will have some sort of physical dimension (since we will have physical bodies), so one would expect some sort of time. However, the time may be quite different than what we are used to. It may be nothing more than an understanding/experience of the ordering of events.

When we open the door and walk into the church to attend Mass, once the Mass begins and we also begin to participate, we are no longer in linear time but now present in God’s time.

We take His time within our hearts and soul through the Word and Eucharist. We go out in serving the Lord and extend His eternal time to those around us – through Christ’s joy and forgiveness, bringing with us His new life.

His new life breaks linear time and each day is brand new for us in the Lord and when we sleep, He continues to feed us with His grace and to protect us.
