I have heard our priest mention on a couple of occasions that the Apostles thought that Christ would return during their lifetime. Is this true and are there passages in the Blible that support this? If not where can I get information on this?

I have heard of what your are talking about. I have also heard of the “No man knows the hour” passage as well. I don’t know what to think of it. I can’t wait till someone comes by that does.

here are a couple of verses where Jesus, talking to the
apostles, may have given them the idea he would return
during their lifetimes… plus i seem to recall a couple of more,
i’ll have to look deeper… but, you are right… no man knows
the hour… and we shouldn’t even speculate…

John 21: (NAB)
20Peter, turning around, saw the (AD)disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had (AE)leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?”
21So Peter seeing him said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?”
22Jesus said to him, “If I want him to remain (AF)until I come, what is that to you? You (AG)follow Me!”

Revelation 3:10-11 (KJV)

10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.
11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

So we can probably say the Apostles did think that Christ would return during their lifetime. I have heard some Catholics say that the Apostles wrote for the times they were in and that we shouldn’t take everything so literally in the New Testament. I’ve heard this as a defense for women in the clergy. Women were never in any position of power during that point in history so the Apostles wrote from that viewpoint. As times change women in postitions of power within the church should change. Comments please.

Oh this is a poor excuse for pushing women in the priesthood. The Apostles may have expected Christ to return in their life time, but they knew perfectly well that that might not be the case. They wrote as they did to let everyone know then and all those who would follow that we can’t just sit on our bottom ends and think that since Christ hasn’t come yet he won’t come in our life time.

This isn’t a case of the Apostles just writing from their own perspective–a common complaint of all those who want to change something in the Church that cannot and will not be changed. It’s a pale attempt at making a case for what never was going to happen and never will happen with regards to women and the priesthood. Such people appeal to their listeners’ human understanding, but they fool no one who knows something of proper biblical interpretation, and who know that Christ’s Church isn’t going to be influenced by such poor arguments.

Those who make them will only be a footnote in the long history of the Church, that has dealt with all sorts of heretical ideas, all of them supposedly found in the Bible or based on someone’s faulty interpretation(s) of the Bible.

I Cor 7:29-31 I mean, brethren, the appointed time has grown very short; from now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no goods, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. **For the form of this world is passing away. ****

Thank you. Now I have at least some idea of what I can say when some of these women start in on this subject. A couple of these women are in postitions of authority in our church and work hard at keeping things on track but their point of view on this subject really turns me off.

Holland, one thing Jesus was NOT was politically correct. If he wanted women in the priesthood, he would have promoted it no matter who would have complained.

Contrary to their belief, women had prominent roles in many religions back then, so the idea of a woman priest would not have been too hard to swallow back then, as they would have you think.

When asked about it, ask them why Jesus would not let Mary touch Him after he resurrected, while he let the Apostles poke and prod Him. Could it be that in the ancient Jewish religion, only the priests were allowed to handle the sacrifices after they had been offered up, as Jesus had been on the Cross? Hmmmmm…

The Lord did return. Remember when Thomas put his hands into the wounds of the rissen Christ?

Holland,

Christ was a man. He is the ultimate priest. The 12 apostles were bishops (priests). They continued the Tradition of Jesus Christ thru 2 millenia. Never in our history has there ever been ANY reason for women in the priesthood. It’s theologically impossible, because it wasn’t mandated by Christ. This is what JPII meant when he said he did not have the power to allow women into the priesthood. If the church ever started ordaining women, it would no longer be the Catholic Church.

I would counter the argument by also telling the people to show where God ever ordained women into the priesthood in the OT or in the NT. Just because women aren’t priests doesn’t mean they don’t have “authority”, it isn’t about authority when you are a priest: it is about service. Look at whom the Lord chose to give Him flesh; a woman. Men and women are built for two different roles, both worthy.

There are good indications from their writings (although it is important to notice that it is nowhere explicitly stated) that Sts. Paul and John, and probably several, of the Apostles believed Jesus would come within their lifetime or at least within the lifetimes of the young children then living when they wrote. But not Peter. Peter knew that ‘soon’ to God could mean not so soon to us humans. He warned us about it. Check this out:
2 Peter 3:
2 Peter

Chapter 3

1

1 This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you; through them by way of reminder I am trying to stir up your sincere disposition,

2

to recall the words previously spoken by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and savior through your apostles.

3

Know this first of all, that in the last days scoffers 2 will come (to) scoff, living according to their own desires

4

and saying, “Where is the promise of his coming? 3 From the time when our ancestors fell asleep, everything has remained as it was from the beginning of creation.”

5

They deliberately ignore the fact that the heavens existed of old and earth was formed out of water and through water 4 by the word of God;

6

through these the world that then existed was destroyed, deluged with water. 5

7

The present heavens and earth have been reserved by the same word for fire, kept for the day of judgment and of destruction of the godless.

8

6 7 But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day.

9

The Lord does not delay his promise, as some regard “delay,” but he is patient with you, not wishing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

10

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, 8 and then the heavens will pass away with a mighty roar and the elements will be dissolved by fire, and the earth and everything done on it will be found out.

11

9 Since everything is to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought (you) to be, conducting yourselves in holiness and devotion,

12

10 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved in flames and the elements melted by fire.

13

But according to his promise we await new heavens and a new earth 11 in which righteousness dwells.

14

Therefore, beloved, since you await these things, be eager to be found without spot or blemish before him, at peace.

15

And consider the patience of our Lord as salvation, as our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, also wrote to you,

16

speaking of these things 12 as he does in all his letters. In them there are some things hard to understand that the ignorant and unstable distort to their own destruction, just as they do the other scriptures.

17

Therefore, beloved, since you are forewarned, be on your guard not to be led into the error of the unprincipled and to fall from your own stability.

18

But grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory now and to the day of eternity. (Amen.)
[emphasis mine]

Thank God He blessed Peter with special wisdom to be our leader!

According to God, only 2 days have passed since Christ was on earth!
