My wife and I are strongly conservative catholics. I am also very concerned with politics and am on the opposite end of the spectrum from our current president. I would even go so far as to say that I think his moral convictions and political philosophy will lead to the deterioration of our country and way of life.
My wife works with a very fine black lady who is the matriarch of a huge black immediate and extended family. Every summer, she hosts a grand family reunion with over 200 attendees and my wife and I are priviledged to be two of the very few white people who are invited.
These are decent patriotic people who love our country. Before the food lines are opened, the American flag is raised and all attendees rise and sing God Bless America. I always come away feeling good about my country when leaving one of these affairs.
This year we recieved our invitation as usual. Our friend forewarned my wife to keep the date opened and my wife assured her she would. However, the theme of this year’s party is “President Barack Obama, Dr. King’s Dream Come True”.
I am one of those people who can’t even watch the evening news without a dangerous rise in blood pressure. In addition, it is my belief that Obama is the antithesis of Dr. King’s dream. I am convinced that he would not have even gotten the nomination much less the presidency had it not been for the color of his skin.
My wife says it’s up to me but after 42 years of marriage, I know what that “really” means. I feel that if I go and act in agreement with everybody, it would be hypocritical and my self opinion would suffer. However, if I go and act the idiot as I am afraid will happen, that may damage a dear friendship.
Any suggestions?
