There is a Catholic church near me, St. John of the Cross, and their cross behind the altar is an empty cross. That’s the only time I’ve ever seen that in a Catholic church. They also have an odd looking “altar” that actually looked to me like a long folding table with a table cloth laid on it. This church is considered progressive by most of the catholics in the area I believe. I’ve only been there once, when I missed mass at my home parish and they had one about an hour and a half after the last one at my church. If one is not careful, soon their will be an empty cross which is typical of almost every protestant church who even has a cross, even many Anglican or Epsicopal churches only have a cross.
