I just received the Roman Missal 1962, a beautiful book, as a gift. I am not really sure how to use it. I am a little confused about where to go with all the information that is in it (2100 pages or so).
What I want to know is how can I use it at daily Mass. I want to be able to read along with the Gospel and the readings.
Help

If you go to a Traditional mass you could use it. If you go to a Pauline Rite you could not as the readings are completely different.

If you do go to the Traditional just go to the appropriate date and the readings will be there. The Ordinary and the Canon of the Mass are usually in the center of these Missals.

This is how you use the 1962 Missal:
  • Place one of the ribbons in the Proper for the Season. We are now in the Season after Pentecost.
  • Place another ribbon in the Proper Prefaces section. Most Churches use the Preface of the Most Holy Trinity every Sunday. Place your ribbon there.
  • Place another ribbon in the Ordinary of the Mass.
  • If you are attending a Missa Cantata, or sung Mass place one of the ribbons at the Asperges.
All of the sections listed above will be found in the contents page of your Missal.

The Proper for the Season will have the Introit, the Collect, the Epistle, the Gradual, the Gospel, the Offertory, the Secret, Communion, and the Post Communion verses. This is basically the calendar section. I believe this Sunday is the FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST.

The Ordinary of the Mass remains the same throughout the year. This section has the elements of the Mass which never change. It is perhaps the most important part of the Missal.

Hope this answers your question.

This is the best Missal out there in my opinion:

baroniuspress.com/category.php?wid=59&cid=2

It is the same as the one in the second link above, but it’s better to buy directly from the publisher. Also, the barionius website can be changed into whatever currency you use, whether $ or £.

All 1962 Missals are the same. The only difference is in the quality of the binding and paper etc.

Is there one Roman Missal that is better than the other?

I find this one all over the place prominently.

I noticed people had this one when I went to the Latin Mass on 8/15.
If you search the forums, you’ll find a lot of opinions about the Angelus and Baronius missals. I’m sure either one is fine. (I personally have the Angelus and love it, but I also like the Lasance missal).

Prepare to be frustrated the first few times you go to Mass, then you’ll get the hang of it. Personally, I follow along up until the end of the Gospel, then I don’t worry about it as much. Much of the rest of the Mass is silent, so there’s not much following along to do. I totally skip the Preface, and basically just follow along with the ringing of the bells (which is printed in the missal) which usually has me on the right page for the various responses when they come up. I mainly use the missal for personal prayers before mass, before Communion, after Communion and Thanksgiving after Mass.

May I jump in and ask a question about your missal?🙂

Does the '62 missal have directions on when to sit, stand and kneel? I have a couple of older missals and neither one has this feature.

The chapel where the TLM is offered here is no bigger than a postage stamp and everyone does sitting standing and kneeling a little differently from the next person. Lol, it’s kind of confusing. :o

The Angelus Missal does not have printed directions. I copied directions into my missal from one of those red booklets, since people are still uncertain when to stand/sit/kneel where I usually go, too.

**Why is it necessary that all have the same posture?

Because of my physical conditions, I have to sit throughout most of the Liturgy. I’m content to let others stand, sit, or kneel as devotion prompts and health permits.**

Oh, well we don’t have any red booklets. I wonder where I can get one?

Ah, well that’s entirely different. Of course in your case, you’re excused; you have a physical impediment. Or if you had a baby in your lap, you’re excused, something like that.

But ordinarily, why do anything we do at the Mass? If I were to follow your logic to it’s end, then why not just have complete anarchy? Anything goes.

Answer: Because there’s structure to the Mass.

Mike,
I ordered a booklet Missal (this will be very helpful). I also ordered Fulton J. Sheen’s booklet, “Calvary and the Mass.”

I already have a copy of “know your Mass”, it’s a little gem.🙂

Sorry if I’m pulling this thread off topic… I’ll stop now.
