I was recently informed that when we pray the Rosary we are to say it audibly and not to ourselves. I never heard this before, is it true?

It is probably the best way to pray it but I doubt there is a rule about it, more a recommendation.

“It’s not a rule, it’s more of a guideline”

If I am in the church and there are people there, then I move my lips and not to make any sound. If I am all alone at home, in the chapel or inside the church, I prefer to hear my voice when praying with the Rosary. It helps us concentrate on what we praying better this way.

However, if I do not move my life and just pray in my head, I get lost.

I usually just move my lips a bit when I pray by myself - I’d rather save my voice for when I need it to speak to others or in public 😃

I pray both
The Rosary and The Chaplet of the Divine Mercy.

In both cases, I pray both audibly - but just barely above a whisper, whether at home or at the Church (before Mass, of course).

I’m not aware of a rule that it must be prayed aloud ??

God bless,

Whoever told you this has absolutely no idea what they’re talking about.

For centuries prior to Vatican II, pious Catholic worshipers used to recite the rosary silently during Mass with the consent and approval of the bishops and the pope.

The key to saying a rosary properly is how you meditate while saying it, not whether you’re moving your lips or your vocal cords.

Adjust the way you pray the rosary to fit the situation. If you’re leading a rosary for a group of people, pray it out loud, obviously. If you’re riding on a public bus say it to yourself silently. It’s all good.

God loves when you pray the rosary.

I usually pray it mentally, but sometimes I move my lips and whisper it. The main reason I don’t say it out loud is due to the fact that I pray with my head bowed and I drool if I have my mouth open. 😃

Remember, God hears** all** prayers regardless of whether we think them, whisper them or say them outloud. So I don’t think one way is better or preferred than another. God knows our deepest desires.

Audibly or silently is fine for the prayer. However, some of the added blessings require, or at least used to require, that you at least move your lips.

I was praying the Glorious Mysteries this morning just before Mass, and I was noticing that I find it easier both to meditate on the mysteries and stay on track with the prayers, if I move my lips - when I stop moving my lips, I literally lose my place in the prayer (I forget which half of the Hail Mary I’m in), and have to start it over.

it is not a rule but it really helps to pace your prayer, slow you down for better meditation, keep your mind from wandering. This is also true of LOTH, praying the psalms out loud is what finally helped me keep my mind and heart engaged. I felt a little silly at first, but there is nobody around anyhow, unless I am praying in a group, so I just do it.

I believe one of the apparitions of Mary, probably Fatima or LaSalette, the seers were told to pray the rosary out loud because they had been very lax and slipshod in the way they were praying, not saying all the prayers or the complete prayers.

Do you guys meditate on the mystery while you are saying the 10 Hail Mary’s, or do you meditate on the mystery before or after them? I’ve read some guides online that present it in differing ways. I tend to meditate on them while I’m actually saying the Hail Mary’s. Anybody else?

If I have time, I like to read the Scriptures associated with the Mystery. Or at least a few of them. Or a few devotional thought that are related. I’ll do that mixed in with the 10 Hail Mary’s.

Other than that, I’ll TRY to meditate on them while praying. Which is hard when in a group. I don’t feel like I get much meditation in praying in a group, just me though.

I have found that using some of the techniques recommended by St. Louis Marie de Montfort in his little book Secrets of the Rosary are helpful in meditating on the mysteries as I pray the Rosary, whether I am praying aloud or only mentally.

I checked it out on Amazon, looks like a nice book. I may grab it when I get back in the states in a few weeks. Thanks for the recommendation.

If the reason for praying the Rosary out loud is that Mary can’t hear it otherwise (which I have had people tell me), it’s pure bunk.

The rosary is a very private devotion. There are no rules. Speaking aloud helps you concentrate on the words. I don’t know how it is with people generally, but I cannot think my way through prayers.

I see it the other way. Saying it aloud helps me concentrate on the mysteries.

I’d say it is almost impossible for one to both meditate on the mysteries and mentally recite the prayers.
