It was solely Biblical. As I said, just the words of Gabriel, ‘Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee’;, then the words of Elizabeth at the Visitation ,‘Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb’. to which was added. ‘Jesus’;.
Apparently various prayers and invocations were added unofficially. over the years, until the Council of Trent standardised it in the sixteenth century.
