The Rosary

Wow. You got me there. I know there are special color coded rosaries for different devotions or chaplets (i.e. for priests in Purgatory) but I don’t know about the one your are talking about. Does that local Catholic radio station have a website? Maybe they explain it there or you can contact them and ask.
Yeah, it was on EWTN. I think I’ve seen these other beads before. Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away…when I would never consider being a Catholic, I was at my local Christian books store and saw these packets that contained, I don’t know, maybe a dozen beads on a string. They were all different colors, and on the back it had some definitions of what each color was for. They called them “prayer beads”. I didn’t know what they were, so I moved on. I haven’t seen them since, but maybe I’m not looking in the right area.

Hello everyone,

Another question about the Rosary. The local Catholic Radio has a program of the Rosary 2 or 3 times per day. I often hear them say “the clear blue bead is for…” and they list prayer intentions for different colored beads. Can anyone explain these other beads, what they are for, and how they are generally incorporated into the Rosary? I find it hard to focus on saying the Hail Mary while meditating on the Mystery, let alone another set of beads to pray with. lol
I hear that too, it is usually the 1:30pm (pacific) rosary. Those are for special intentions or petitions. The group praying the rosary has probably a multi-colored rosary. So, they would offer a blue bead for this…let us say aborted babies…then the red would be for their mothers…and so forth. You can say intentions too, or pleas for help…before you start the rosary…for example…you can say “I am praying and dedicating this rosary for…(state your intention)…” or you can have a different intention for each decade.

So then when you state your intentions, either for the whole rosary or for each decade, do you still meditate on the mysteries?

I would say yes. But do not put too much worry in it. I have a hard time too, so do many others. It is part of our daily struggle to conform to Christ, it is part of the cross we bear everyday. In due time, as you progress and learn more, and with God’s help, you will be able to do it.

My suggestion is your first intention, ask for help in your concentration as you pray and meditate the rosary.

God bless…

I’m beginning to see how the rosary is a valuable spiritual devotion.

I found the 15 promises that Mary told regarding those who say the Rosary, and I was a little put off. I mean, some of them sound like they are a bit out of her league.

For instance:
  1. Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall receive signal graces.
Why are we “serving” her? Don’t we only serve God? And how is Mary able to give grace?
  1. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary.
Once again, the graces.
  1. The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall not perish.
Is this because of devotion to Mary that souls will not perish?
  1. Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the Sacraments of the Church.
How is that one will not die without the Sacraments of the Church if they have a true devotion to the Rosary?
  1. I shall deliver from purgatory those who have been devoted to the Rosary.
Does this mean that they get a “get out of jail free” card because they prayed the rosary, no matter the venial sins they committed?

These are the promises that I have a bit of concern for, not a problem with, but just a confusion. They seem to state that she is kind of taking the place of God by giving out mercy and such. Can anyone please clarify these things for me?

Is there a special way to hold the Rosary while praying either the Rosary or Chaplet?

I don’t believe they’re officially approved by the Church.

There is no particular way to hold the Rosary, whatever is comfortable to you. It is not necessarily the action of prayer as it is the intent in your heart. I began to pray the Rosary with a booklet I downloaded with the prayers and mysteries outlined and I followed it as I prayed. It just takes time to learn and The Holy Family smiles at us from Heaven at our efforts.

I like to find a quiet place where I can focus my mind on the mystery of the day and visualize the verses/bible story as I pray.

In regards to your concerns over the 15 promises of Mary we receive when we pray the Rosary.

The graces we receive by praying the Rosary comes from God. He is pleased that we are honoring His Mother whom He made our Mother from the cross on Calvary. It is our reflection on the Gospel that draws us closer to God as we pray, by doing so we glorify God’s work and receive His blessings. Our devotion to Mary is the same devotion He holds to His Mother. It is the grace of God which strengthens our faith, it is love that binds us to God. Devotion to Mary is devotion to Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Mary and Jesus shared their blood through the umbilical for nine months. Blood both human and Devonne, God made flesh, by the power of the Holy Spirit. When we meditate on how God was made flesh, we begin to see just how blessed, and full of grace Mary is.

Satan fears Mary because he will perish at the hands of her Son, as foretold in Genesis.
Saint Padre Pio called it his “weapon” against evil and every time we pray the Rosary Satan trembles because he know his days are numbered.

Genesis 3:15 I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel.

Mary is to be our model, she accepted God’s plan of salvation, totally and humbly just as we should.

Ok thanks. I had heard from someone that they learned how to “hold the Rosary”. Maybe its just a thing to help prevent the beads from getting tangled.

QUESTION!!!

Got tons of them, as you can probably tell.

I’ve heard that people pray the Rosary for other people, for certain things to happen, asking for a miracle, etc…

So, my question is: when people pray the Rosary for, say a friend to come to the CC, are they still meditating upon the mysteries or upon their request(s)? Also, how does one go about having a Rosary be dedicated to a particular thing. Is it just a prayer that you say or something to that effect?

PS
Thanks to everyone who has helped me with the Rosary. I thought that you might like to hear this. I was praying the Rosary the other night and was meditating on the Glorious Mysteries. The one that I’ve had the hardest time with was the 5th, the Coronation of Mary. Well, long story short, God answered my prayer on the spot. I prayed for the blessing of understanding this mystery of Mary’s coronation and why it deserved to be meditated upon, and I received an answer to my prayer. Glory be to God!!!

Your enthusiasm for the rosary and the faith make me happy. 🙂

Here is a prayer before reciting the rosary (for dedication/intentions):

Queen of the Holy Rosary, you
have deigned to come to Fatima
to reveal to the three shepherd
children the treasures of grace hidden
in the Rosary. Inspire my heart
with a sincere love of this devotion,
in order that by meditating on the
Mysteries of our Redemption which
are recalled in it, I may be enriched
with its fruits and obtain peace for
the world, the conversion of sinners
and of Russia, and the favor I
ask of you in this Rosary (Here mention your request).
I ask it for the greater glory of God, for your own
honor, and for the good of souls,
especially for my own. Amen.

Russia is mentioned because at the time, it was post Russian revolution.

So then do I still say Russia when saying the prayer? Or is that just the original prayer that you were giving me.

Well, as the Bible says, ask and you shall receive…and your heart is in the right place.👍

Glory be to God, indeed, DJE.

As for your question, we call in “intention” and goes something like this… "for the intention of (name), for his (name of purpose of you intention or petition or plea…let us say cure for an ailment, enlightenment, thank you to God, any reason you want…)…then go about praying the rosary the way you would normally. I would say continue with meditating as you would without your special intention. We still meditate upon the mysteries.

What I usually do, after the Hail Holy Queen, I would continue to say a prayer for my petition, thank God for listening to my prayer, thank Mary for bringing it to His son.

Hope this helps.

Cool. so just say what the intention is at the beginning of the Rosary and then go about it with as a normal rosary. The only time I’ve heard of a significant change is on my local Catholic radio. They do a pro-life rosary at night. They have colored Rosaries and each bead represents something special. So I didn’t know if that was a special case or if that is what we can do for any intention.

That was me. Nope, I had no idea how to hold a Rosary. So I’d watch Mother Angelica and the nuns on EWTN, while they prayed the Rosary. If you ever get a chance, watch the nuns. I kept watching, kept trying different ways, till I found the one that is comfortable for me. As others have said, there really is no special way, just what’s comfortable for you.

Oh ok 😛

Got me all worried that I was doing it wrong. I was like “WHAT??? There’s a way to HOLD the Rosary???”

Its all good. Thanks for the clarification asia53!!

It does get easier overtime. It quites my heart and brings me inner peace.
You in the beginning it was very hard because I’m hispanic and every rosary I went to as a child was always differnt then the other, man it seems they got so many versions of the rosary. Eventually I settled for the english version, simple much more simple.
