As this month is a Marian month, we pray the rosary after mass and in my parish they pray it at 15 minutes. It is way too fast for me.
I never pray it any slower than 45 mins and most of the time like 70-75 mins (without readings). With readings it would easily be 90 mins.

But then again: i want to give Our Lady the roses, not throw them after Her or scream, shout and talk way too fast. It is such a difference.
An important one.

The traditional rosary is not one of my favorite devotions. (Big surprise! :p)
That said, I do pray it at least a couple times a week, and usually pray the Sorrowful or the Luminous Mysteries (it was actually this addition that got me to pick up a rosary in the first place! :getholy:)

Anyway, I find the rosary to be a comfort when I am stressed or have so much on my mind that I find my normal prayer routine to be fruitless. It calms me, and sometimes that is all I need.

I do use my rosary beads in a chaplet of my own design, based on the Examen from the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. I use prayers from the Exercses and from the writings of the Jesuits that correspond to the different elements of the Examen. I have found it to be most helpful as an examination of conscience the night before my scheduled confession time.

The rosary is a wonderful devotion, but it is not for everyone.

The best advice I ever received was from a very wise priest who was my first spiritual director-
“Pray as you can, not as you can’t. What matters is that you pray!!” 😃

I love that advice from that priest! 👍

I, too, have a strong pull for both the Sorrowful and the Luminous mysteries. I have not only learned a great deal, but have found great strength and peace in meditating upon them.

Hey, I just had a question. I was unsure whether to add it into the other thread on the Rosary, but I didn’t want to hijack anyone’s thread so I decided to open a new one.

I’ve heard of Lutherans and Anglicans praying the Rosary, but replacing the “Hail Mary” with the Jesus prayer. I also know that the Orthodox have prayer beads that use the Jesus prayer.

I’m not knocking the Hail Mary at all, but is this an acceptable substitution? I know the Rosary is a devotion to Mary and that it’s not required or anything, but I was just curious.

OK, one more question:

What does “OP” mean? I keep seeing it in threads and I know it refers to the first post of a thread, but I never understood what the letters stand for, and I figured I might as well ask it in a new thread :-P.

My understanding that since the Rosary is a private devotion, and has many varients, that it wouldn’t really matter, but I dont know if then, with the substitution of the Jesus prayer, you could really call it “praying the rosary?” since the Rosary is normally associate with Mary.

But it’s a good question you ask. 🙂

You can certainly use the Rosary beads, as a method of counting, or an Easter Prayer rope to pray the Jesus Prayer. However, I wouldn’t call it praying the Rosary. I would call it praying the Jesus Prayer. 😃
 
You can actually pray whatever suits you when you pray the Rosary. It would obviously be most normative to have these prayers center on Mary and Jesus, but you can pray whatever you want. It’s a private prayer.

I didn’t even know there was an “Easter Prayer rope” :D.

OP can be used to mean “Original Poster” or “Original Post”. A lot of the time it’s impossible to tell (and irrelevant) which a person means. In both cases you are referring back to the first post in a thread, or to the person who made that first post. It confused me at first too.

Regarding the Rosary, I suppose you can pray it any way you want but I’d generally gravitate towards those forms known and supported by the Church community and in this case by approved private revelations (just because they are approved doesn’t mean they must be believed and indeed there’s one or two approved revelations I’m rather skeptical about, but others I suspect were for real).

Something more mainstream you might want to look into is the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, which also uses the rosary beads and which uses what has sometimes been described as a Western variation of the Jesus Prayer as well as a prayer distinctly similar to one in the Byzantine Liturgy.

you can say any prayer you want and use a string of beads, even one designed as a rosary to keep track of the prayers, but it is not a rosary unless you pray the rosary, that is, the Our Fathers, Hail Mary’s, Glory be’s with meditations on the scriptural mysteries.
 
Oh, I heartily recommend that anyone not devoted to the Rosary pray for that grace and then read as much of St. Louis de Montfort as you can.

Also, I’ve really learned a lot by having just a picture to hold my interest while I’m praying (about 20 minutes when I’m alone - 30 minutes with the children!). My favorite finding this year was in meditating on the Joyful Mysteries, especially the Finding of Jesus Teaching in the Temple. I have often been amused at the faces of those in the Temple who were being taught. They look so marveled, so amused at His youth and good answers. Some look puzzled, “How did He come up with that?” All are happy, some take notes…

Then I realized that this great joy was known from all time, that Jesus saw these men’s joy and anticipated His own joy in teaching them. Oh! How we love a student who enjoys hearing what we teach! He must have had a giant joyful moment, too.

More, Our Lady and St. Joseph are there, too. They wait. They have to have heard His teaching in joy, too.

I really am glad that we have learned to add meditating on the images to our family Rosary.

The rest of the nights we use the little booklets with pictures for our meditating. It really does help the children to pay better attention.

Well, for me it turns out it starts at six thirty, so it’s even worse for me! I’m just not a morning person. I really can’t wake up if I don’t get enough sleep. This may prove to be a problem…

Any way you can tape it?

If not, I do know it can be purchased from EWTN religious catalogue so may be you can ask for it as a gift for Christmas or your birthday or some other event. ?

Just trying to brain storm.
I hear you about getting up early though.

No, there’s not, unfortunately. I’ll probably ask for it for Christmas.

Well, waking up in the morning is bad for me, because if I haven’t gotten enough sleep, I literally cannot wake up. This makes me a bit worried if I join a Religious Order, because I hear that if you cannot wake up and form yourself to their way of life they will kick you out of the Order.
