Well, waking up in the morning is bad for me, because if I haven’t gotten enough sleep, I literally cannot wake up. This makes me a bit worried if I join a Religious Order, because I hear that if you cannot wake up and form yourself to their way of life they will kick you out of the Order.
I will pray for you!

Do you go to bed early? or later and that is why getting up early is hard?
Perhaps you can get up in habit of getting up early a couple days of week, or if that it still a challenge maybe a couple time a month. (think of it as penance!!) with the idea of praying the Holy Land Rosary.

Just trying to brainstorm a way of developing a different habit . 🙂

I usually go to sleep after one in the morning or so, but even then I should be able to wake up at nine to get eight full hours of sleep, but I usually wake up at ten or eleven, and sometimes, if somebody hasn’t woken me up, twelve. I’ve tried going to bed earlier, but I just can’t do it. I could go to bed tomorrow at nine and just stare at the ceiling until one or so. It’s ridiculous, really. I’ve been praying to Blessed Pope John Paul the Great as he too struggled with waking up in the morning. Perhaps this will be the miracle that causes his canonization for Sainthood? 😃

Hello! 🙂 If you own any Apple products (iPhones, iPads, iPods, etc), there are many Rosary apps (including talking ones). Just be sure to research their content in the description & even online before you download (unless it’s free, in which case you can just delete with no regrets if you don’t like it). I prefer “Holy Rosary” by EBSolutions ($.99)- it gives you many choices (like turning off the Luminous Mysteries), many in-app choices & Latin prayers. It contains all of the Vatican-approved prayers for the Rosary (meaning it’s not missing anything, even the litany). There’s also a “deluxe” version for $1.99. There’s also “URosary” (which is free for a limited time!) with an alarm clock for prayer reminder, a calendar to keep track of the 54 Day Rosary Novena, a place to write your petition, & gorgeous graphics, & more. There are many- I use a few in conjunction with holding my own Rosary, although most Rosary apps provide “beads”. I’m using these apps mostly to learn the Latin. I loooove Latin!
I hope this might help…

There’s your problem. You need to start disciplining yourself. I mean that, seriously. As an adult. You cannot be an adult and sleep in until 10 or midday. You miss Lauds, you miss valuable morning time, and generally it’s not good for you. This is just common sense - never mind your aspirations to the Religious life where getting up at 4am is the norm.

Sleep at your normal time 1am. But set an alarm (or 5) for 6. Do that for a week. You will start going to bed earlier and eventually fall into a pattern where you will naturally rise at 6 and go to bed at around 9-10pm. You will have to be disciplined. I don’t buy this “I really cannot get up” tripe. If you wanted to, you could. You are not disabled, nor are you devoid of rationality or control. God gave you a will, use it for His glory - and yes, I am saying you can use this for His glory. Get up, say prayers, make your bed and get on with your day.

Well, I will tell you that I have struggled with the same things in the past. My body naturally has a very different sleep schedule than that of most people. Sadly, my job does not allow me to sleep in any more. First, I would encourage you to ask your guardian angel to help you remember to wake up on time. Then, listen to your guardian angel when he does. That, my friend, is the hard part (for me anyway)! But in time, with much determination and will, you will develop the habits that will allow you to have the prayer life that God calls you to, which, incidentally, will require many sacrifices. We all know that already, but that doesn’t make it any easier when it comes time to make those sacrifices. All I can speak of is from personal experience, but that is how it is for me. I am praying for you that He may bless you abundantly!

Thanks for the advice, and you’re right, but if I don’t have enough sleep I literally cannot wake up usually. I have fallen off the top of a bunk-bed onto a solid wood floor and not waken up. People have told me that my inability to wake up is remarkable and not usual. It doesn’t happen every time, though. I can wake up, it just takes a lot. Usually people have to yell at me for ten minutes or so to wake me up early in the morning. However I will take your advice. I just hope that it works.

If what you are saying is true and you cannot wake up despite your will to wake up, you may have a medical condition. If not, realise that this is down to your will. Yes. Your will. You have no excuse, only that you do not desire enough to wake up. Sorry for the harsh words 😃 But I am telling it like it is!

Pray to God dude. He will help you, if you comply. Be putty in His hands and He will mould you.

I am almost 100% sure that I do have a medical condition when it comes to this, but every time I bring it up my sister says I’m crazy.

This does have a bit to do with it, as I enjoy night the most. However, I would give a lot to be able to wake up early. I have no doubt that it is possible for me to wake up early in the morning. However it will take extreme discipline, and it will take a really loud alarm clock, as the only thing that has ever been able to wake me up in the morning is a fire alarm.

Its bio-rhythems, you have to switch them around intentionally. Force yourself to stay-up and not sleep on a first day off from work. Then the following night lay down at 10-11pm. This is how you change sleeping patterns.

Not hard at all I use to this with a therapeutic community of over 100. Lights were out at 11.00 and up at 5 on the floor functioning by 5:30. You’d be very surprized how easy it is re-create your habits with ones which are more conducive to time management and a postive lifestyle. There was also no television, music, reading, nothing but sleep.

You cannot “try” to do anything. How does one try to pick up a pencil on the floor? You can do it, you will do it, you must do it. When you arrive at this frame a mind than you can achieve the goal.

No different than following the Blessed Mother thus the Lord.

You can also go to sights such as the Rosary.org or whichever, And use it as a guide to walk you through.

Pray the Rosary alone out loud while meditating on the Myteries at each decade for each Mystery. It will help you remain focused. You can pray with others or at Mass for the Miraculous Medal etc. Monday nights are medal Rosarys worldwide. You can pray in silence however you will more than likely find more distraction to start this way. As your meditative ability increase’s then I would try this. Also you can meditate on the Mysteries after the Rosary for 15-minutes. However for me the two go much easier hand in hand.

Good habits are formed just as bad ones, by repitition. To find this difficult to do is simply tribulation, offer that to the Lord for reparation of sinners and world peace. Tribulation is sanctification.

You should pray the 5 decades complete all the time. At times this may not be possible. But its also shouldn’t be a habit to pray a decade here and there through the day.

I really respect your posts NTM, and admire your sense of charity and good will. But I have to take issue here. Often people who don’t struggle with something say this type of thing, that is is just a matter of will power or making proper choices.

Those who do not struggle with weight say things like, “Why don’t you just eat less?” We either look for a treatable medical condition and if that cannot be found, we fall back to the “Pull yourself up by your boot straps” mentality.

I have been told this about addictions, that my addiction was nothing more than a choice and that I was simply making a choice to stay addicted. But those who struggle with addiction know that it isn’t that easy. I am free, yes, thanks be to God, like putty in his hands.

But some struggles are not curable with pills and not just a matter of will-power. People struggle with things, many things, and it often what is simple for one to change is not so simple for another, and what appears to be easy to change is much more difficult for others than anyone thinks.

The Rosary is used for other prayer recitations as Fab asked earlier. The Rosary is used for the Chaplet of Divine Mercy etc.

Does anyone know when in history the Rosary began to be recited in the vernacular rather than Latin?

Thank you 🙂 Likewise.

On the contrary in fact, everybody on earth has their vices and their addictions. Not so? So even if I don’t have experience in the waking up area (which, by the way, I do!) I have experience elsewhere. In my own experience then, medical conditions aside, I firmly believe it is a matter of willpower and making good choices. That’s all it comes down to and that’s all it ever could come down to unless you are of the belief that you are possessed or that a green goblin is doing it to you 🙂

As someone who went from 40lbs overweight to where I am now, I can tell you that in terms of food it is simply just a matter of “eat less, make the right food choices, and exercise!”. Pulling yourself up by the boot straps worked for us in the past - why not any more?

Addictions are something different; they are in a totally different category to more trivial matters such as eating less or waking up at a specific time. However, they still require an element of willpower as I am sure you know.

It might be hard, yes. It might take a few attempts, yes. But it is not impossible. We have the God-given power to do it through sheer will alone and that is it. If it means we have to change a few things then so be it! Lucky we also have the power of prayer to help us.

Perhaps I am just a bit too old fashioned, but I see no other explanation for these things. If it isn’t medically treatable, and if it doesn’t come down to will power then how does one get out of bad habits? Even if I am wrong (I may be wrong indeed) I feel that I am at least correct for this sleeping habit thing 🙂

Did it originate in Latin?
I believe this all happened in a time period where various languages such as English, Slovic and so forth were a primary language of use in specific areas. Though yes I believe the Rosary arrived in Latin.

I have heard it mentioned that the Latin version is recommended and prefered by many Catholics. If I’m not mistaken St Louis de Montfort spoke on this.

For example have you ever seen an exorcism where the Catholic Fathers revert to Latin for its greater affect? IMHO opionion the same thinking occurs with the Rosary. In the war of good and evil the Latin seems to be a highly favored language. Especially when very powerful demonic force is encountered. Major exorcism in other words.

Maybe someone else could further elaborate and define.

I can definitely vouch for the part about addictions. Breaking my addiction to my lustful sins was the hardest thing I ever had to do (Next to confessing them of course!). In the end it took willpower, confession, and much prayer. I’ll simply take the confession part out of this equation and use willpower and prayer to start waking up early. Hopefully I’ll be able to whip myself into shape within two months. Thanks for your help, NewsTheMan. I have always admired you and your posts. But do you really live in Africa? 😃

No problem - I doubt I’ve been much help or told you things you didn’t already know. I guess we shall see how much help I’ve been in 2 months or so 🙂 Let us know how it all goes (I’ll still be around until early January)!

And yes, I live on the African continent - in South Africa 😛

What do you mean you’ll still be around until January? Are you joining a Religious Order?

Interesting. I wasn’t aware that people in Africa actually had computers. 😃

Yup, in January I will be joining the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer (see my sig!). Well, for a month anyway, and then I will ask the Superior to accept me as an Aspirant where I will then go on to postulancy, novitiate and final vows. If it is God’s will then let it be - but this is my plan for the future 🙂 Of course, this means that come January I will no longer be a member of CAF.

Aha, many people in Africa have computers. We design our mud huts using them 🙂

Guary Taylor,I have to agree with you.In the reading iv done on the Demonic and the Catholic Rite of exorcism Using Latin is like hitting them with a hammer.
THE Church has has come a long way from its roots and has abandon’d many of its original ways.Father Gabriele Amorth speaks of this himselfe.
Iv have also spoken personally with those who are in the know on these things and They have stated the same. That the use of Latin is extremely powerful in combating the demonics.
leading my thoughts even deeper into Values and Truth.
