The Rosary....

Can anyone outline some of the “rules” (for lack of a better word) for the Rosary? In other words, is it OK to pray for one’s own time in purgatory (I’ve heard no to this). Is it OK to pray for a specific issue or sin in one’s own life? Or an issue in someone else’s life?

All of the things you mentioned can certainly be prayed for with the Rosary.

I think the prayer should be that you’re sanctified in this life and experience your purgation in this life, not assume that you’ll end up in Purgatory. You should aim for Heaven, not Purgatory.

Or you can pray for the poor souls in Purgatory instead. That way, those poor souls who are purified quicker as a result of your prayers will be grateful to you and not only pray for your life here on earth but assuming you fall short of Heaven and end up in Purgatory you’ll have all those grateful souls praying for your release.

Yes, not only is it ok but praying for the spiritual/temporal needs of ourselves and others is something we should all do.

You can pray for whatever intentions you desire! Our church has a daily prayer group that does the Rosary, and before the group begins, everyone has a chance to state any intentions that they want the prayers to serve - for example “I say this Rosary for the intentions of my neighbor who is going in for an operation next week…” Some people just say “For my special intention”, to keep it private; the group leader states for the intention of those who asked that we pray for them, every now and then someone says “For Father xxx who asked that we pray for the clergy…”.
