What do I say to someone who says that the Bible doesn’t say we have to go to Mass of Sundays but only have to keep the day holy. Related to this, what do I say to one who doesn’t recognize Sunday has the Christian Sabbath?

Thank-you for all your (name removed by moderator)ut.

Well, first of all, Sunday isn’t the Christian sabbath. It is the Lord’s Day.

Second, the bible doesn’t say we have to go to mass every Sunday. But it does say “do this in memory of me”, regarding the mass. It also shows an established hierarchy of a Church with a clear authority to teach and produce teachings, which it has, regarding attending mass every Sunday.

SUNDAY ismore properly the "Lord 's Day " because it is the day that Jesus rose from the dead. It is also the day when the “Lord’s Supper” was performed. Saturday was the day Jewish Christians went to the Temple to be close to their Jewish roots and people. As the church grew and more pagans entered the church going to temple on Saturday was not s part of their culture or belief
Being Christians we do not have to follow the “Holiness CODE” NOR THE Sabbath rules.

We should say to this person: The Catholic Church offers us guidance based on scripture, tradition, and the magisterium of the Church. Catholics are supposed to attend Mass on Sunday and Holy Days.

The gospel of Luke (I think it is) or maybe Acts says that the disciples met on Sunday evening to celebrate the Lord’s supper.

Going to Mass is the best way to keep the day holy. There’s really no list of alternatives for keeping the day holy.

The Sabbath is depicted in scripture as having been created by God on the seventh day of creation. That is the spiritual / theological perspective of scripture. It’s an obligation to be satisfied.

Yes, the Jews only went up to the Temple three times a year or for a special occasion. But, the sense of obligation is there. Your friend would not seem to recognize any obligation. The hidden agenda of this thread question is the old sola scriptura, prove it to me issue.

The Sadducees were a group that only recognized the five books of the Torah as definitive, not the other Hebrew writings. They seem to have disappeared when the Temple was destroyed in 70 A.D. The Jews later substituted synagogue attendance as equivalent to the Temple worship, and they recognized prayer as an equivalent substitute for animal sacrifices. Jewish experience in the Babylonian exile and after the destruction of the Temple shows a broader approach to the chiseled-in-stone requirements of the Torah.

Your friend want to argue the Reformation all over again. Lots of luck. Look around for threads that have discussed this ad nauseam.

I’m finally reading the Catechism of the Catholic Church, from cover to cover. I think it covers the commandments, one at a time. If you look at it, I’m sure there’s a good discussion of Sunday Mass obligation.

2 things. The first thing I would do is watch this great video Jimmy Akin did:

Second thing I would do is read this article:
catholic.com/tracts/sabbath-or-sunday

After doing these two steps, you should be ready to answer.

…it is difficult to deal with legalists… they tend to see only what they desire to see and they reject everything that is right in plain sight… Scriptures do not contain everything ever Taught by Christ Jesus or by His Disciples… this is where the Catholic Church has full advantage over the johnny comes…

…do you Believe in the Holy Trinity?

…well according to the math/science of those that object to Sunday Worship Christians should not Believe in the Holy Trinity since it is not found in Scriptures…

…what is Sabbath?

…it certainly is not “Saturday!”

…nor is is synonymous to 7…

…Sabbath (I may be wrong since I’m not a linguist nor a historian) means day of rest… as Commanded by Yahweh God as He rested from Creation on the 7th day of Creation; this “rest” eventually got mixed with and ceded to Worship (as attested to the Jewish gathering on Shabbath for the reading of Sacred Scriptures)… Christ, the Lord of the Sabbath, Rose on Sunday (1st day of the current calendar–not sure about the ancient ones since some had very irregular names and months and number of days per month); His Disciples (some which were His Apostles) began to Celebrate the Breaking of the Bread (the Lord’s Supper) on Sunday… eventually the Church made Sunday the official Day of Worship for Christians… so Sunday began to take place of the Sabbath “rest” day. In most Christian nations around the world Sunday became the one day of the week which both the Church and society at large respected as most businesses would be “closed” for Sunday.

This issue of which day to Worship/respect is not new… St. Paul addressed it this way:
5 One person thinks that some days are holier than others, and another thinks them all equal. Let each of them be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 The one who makes special observance of a particular day observes it in honour of the Lord. (Romans 14:5-6a)
Here’s what is truly interesting about those who object to the Churh’s Teachings… the Church holds Sunday as the official Day of Worship and Rest… but the Chruch Worships every single day of the week–even in those places that are so anti-Christ that the Church is under constant oppression the laity continue to gather and Worship both on Sunday and the rest of the week!

…so the Apostles Taught the Church to gather on Sunday for Breaking of the Bread (Worship) and the Church holds Sunday in preferred status while simultaneously Worshiping on the other six days of the week… where’s the fault… in that Catholics do not celebrate the originial Cration but the Re-Creation in Christ, the Lord of the Sabbath?

To the person that says sabbath is not sarutday…that is incorrect. The Sabbath is indeed historically the seventhday and every other word rooted from it and derived from it means the day of rest. The jews know the sabbath to have always landed on the seventh day of the week. notice that no matter happens to the calender, the 7th day week cycle has always remained consistent.

secondly…when Jesus rose from the dead sunday he did not give a decree to observe sunday as a special holy day. notice that none of the apostles aftwards observe sunday as a holy day but continued to observe the sabbath (saturday). Jesus also states that he is the lord of the sabbath. (mathew 12:8)

the 10 commandments also say to keep the sabbath day Holy…not “the lords day”. Jesus says that if we love Him we ought to obey his commandments and thats all of them, not some of them, all of them.

Untrue. In acts 20:7, they gathered for worship on “the first day of the week”. Likewise in Revelation (though I forget where)
the 10 commandments also say to keep the sabbath day Holy…not “the lords day”. Jesus says that if we love Him we ought to obey his commandments and thats all of them, not some of them, all of them.
And what do you believe “keep it holy” means?

Historically that was true, to apoint. First Christians were Jews.not surprising because Jesus was a Jew and Saturday (actually Friday sunset-Saturday sunset) that they should worship in a place comfortable to them. After Jesus died and rose from dead along with Pentecost, the church was born, Eucharist was instituted and thus the Lord’s day was made the more important day. Shabbat, Friday night, temple Saturday morning. Gathering together with the brothers and sister’s and sharing a communal meal was Sunday.which seems more important to the early church?following the routine they were comfortable with non believers of Jesus or a communal meal with fellow believers.? When Gentiles started to come into the church what connection would they feel with the Jewish sabbath.none.what connection with the temple? None.after awhile Jewish Christians were no longer welcome in synagogues anyway.
. Sabbath is a day of rest. The lord’s day of celebration and joy for Jesus rose from the dead. JEWS were and are bound by Sabbath laws.Gentiles do not have to obey those sabbath laws because they are not Jewish. Unlike some would like you to believe this happened very early in the church. Apostolic time.
Besides the sabbath was made for man not man for the sabbath.

Hi, Truth searcher!

Welcomed to the forum!

…please understand “sabbath” or “shabbat” does not mean Saturday (Shabbat (Hebrew: שַׁבָּת, “rest” or “cessation”: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shabbat )… the actual name (Saturday) comes from pagan/world culture:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturday
Its Latin name dies Saturni (“Saturn’s Day”) entered into Old English as Saeternesdaeg. Saturday was named no later than the 2nd century for the planet Saturn,
…as for the changes, why did Christ’s Apostles celebrate the Breaking of the Bread on the 1st Day of the week? Why did they not continue to gather in the synagogues or follow the other Jewish customs prescribed by the Mosaic Law?

…they began to celebrate gatherings on the 1st day of the week because they were celebrating Jesus’ Resurrection… consequently, the emerging Church adopted some customs from Jewish worship but created/initiated new ones–ones that allowed them to celebrate Christ!

Shabbat/Sabbath means day of rest, so when Yahweh God Calls for the celebration of the Sabbath Christians who celebrate Christ’s day of resurrection (Sunday: 1st day of the week) are not braking God’s Commandment because they are resting (observing God’s Command to Rest). Consider too that God’s Rest did not happen on “Saturday” but on the “Seventh Day of Creation;” yet, when we observe Scriptures we find that the cycle that offers us the 24/7 (day/week) did not originate on the first day of Creation but on the fourth… so Yahweh God did not rest on “Saturday” (24/7) but on the seventh day (Shabbat) of Creation.

Christ’s Resurrection initiates a new Creation (corruptible into incorruptible) and Christ’s disciples do well to observe His Day as the Christian day of Rest.

Jesus fulfilled the old law and gave a new law that would not pass away.

He repeated each of the 10 commandment EXCEPT: Keep holy the Sabbath as part of the new law.

Sunday is the 8th day of the week, the day of the new covenant, following the 7th day of the old covenant, the day of rest.

This is a subject that comes up often. Heb 10 talks about the sacrifice of the mass and the importance of not neglecting to meet as is the habit of some.
