So I’m a disabled Marine and I have a very hard time working and for the past two years I have been sitting around collecting dust, which isn’t helping my situation any. So this job falls in my lap, I truly believe it must be from God because it’s easy, it’s only a couple days a week, and I think I can manage it (not to mention I could really use the money, disability pay isn’t all mansions and sports cars).

The kicker is, the two days I have to work is Saturday and Sunday so I’m having a real hard time saying yes. How can I justify working on God’s day when He is, well God, and I’m so blessed. Wouldn’t that be like spitting on the hand that keeps me?

I’ve prayed about it, I feel like I should take it, but the same time I’m very conflicted about it… Any advice???

I take it the hours you will be working on Saturday and Sunday will coincide with all the Mass times at your parish? If not, you can work on those days and attend Mass.

Here is a link that shows all the Churches in your area and their Mass times:

If your job requires you to work on Saturday and Sunday and you can still attend Mass, it’s OK.

If you are still concerned about working on those days, just speak with your parish priest about the matter.

Congratulations on your new job! God Bless

OP; nurses, doctors etc routinely have to work at weekends. If you do have to miss mass? This is a real reason, not laziness etc!

Thank you for your service to our country! I have a part time job that requires me to work on weekends. Fortunately I am able to attend the Saturday Vigil Mass at my parish. Like you I had some genuine concern that I was working on the Sabbath. I recall being advised that if an individual need to work on Sunday with good reason they can speak with their pastor regarding their situation and attendance at a weekday Mass can be substituted for their Sunday obligation. I ask the moderator or a catechist to correct me if I am wrong. Thank you.

IMHO if you’ve prayed about it and feel like you should take it, it’s probably the Lord OK’ing it also. You’ve put Him first in the matter already. This may be what he’s giving you–exactly what you need and can manage. Continue to go to Mass when you can, and talk with your priest if you feel you need to.

“servile work” not working for a living.
Thank you for your service to this great nation,
May God continue to bless you with a long and fruitful life.

Speak to your priest, he will set up a plan for you.

I am still learning about the faith so will hold off on the question, but thank you for serving our country. It means a lot that someone would sacrifice their life to keep us safe.

No, a weekday Mass cannot “substitute” for the Sunday obligation; if circumstances require work and result in missing Mass, then the obligation is relieved - that is, it is gone.

That is not to say that Mass during the week is not very worthy, but if the obligation no longer exists that week, there is nothing to substitute.

If you’re interested in the job, yes. I used to work weekends and ran myself ragged trying to make it to Mass after work. My pastor said that dispensation is available for that as long as I attend Mass on a day off… by which time I no longer worked weekends so his timing could’ve been better. 🙂

Point is your pastor will probably work with you on this.

Thanks for all the advice…and yes I’m gonna take the job!

Thanks be to God.
