To anyone that can offer some good advice:

I, and my wife, are attending the “Why Catholic?” program with others from our parish. In it, we meet once per week and share our faith in small groups after our priest gives several short lectures. I am not sure if anyone outside of the Rockford, IL diocese is familiar with the program, but it doesn’t really pertain to my question anyway.

So, there’s a lady (late 40s, maybe) in our small group that has not been to confession in a long time. From bits and pieces of her story, I believe she is Catholic, though it may be a conversion since she married a Catholic.

She did ask a question along the lines of “why would I want to confess to a priest if I can simply go straight to God?” I can give her the reasoning behind the Sacrament itself (the logistics), but how, or what, could I say to her to help ease her feelings of awkwardness when seeing a priest?
