I was just hearing about a flock of lambs near jerusalem used for the passover sacrifice. Does anyone have some info on this? Never heard of it before.
 
It seems I heard this on a talk recently, but I can’t recall who was giving the talk.

Why do you ask? Does it strike something in you?
 
It makes sense that there would be a herd of lambs near Jerusalem, so that those who came to sacrifice, but didn’t have a lamb of their own, could buy one.

Are you speaking currently? I thought that the passover sacrifice had to be performed at the temple. No sacrifice is permitted on the temple mount. In fact, no Jews are permitted on the temple mount for fear one of them might attempt to sacrifice. I am very confused.

No, you are confusing two sacrifices that constituted lambs.

The Daily Tamid Sacrifices (there were two every day - 1 at 9:00am and 1 at 3:00 pm) were sacrificial lambs that were sacrificed each day. I would imagine this is one reason you would need a “Sacrificial Flock”. This Sacrifice would have been done in the Temple.

For the Passover Sacrifice, the Lamb was prepared to be eaten in the home. The Jews were required to go to Jerusalem on this and two other festivals (Pentecost was one of them). Because of the long distances traveled, it was often wise to purchase the Passover Lamb once one arrived in Jerusalem. Again, that would necessitate a need for a “Sacrificial Flock”.

Incidentally, the historian Josephus reports that in 70AD, shortly before the sacking of Jerusalem, there were some 250,000 lambs slaughtered that year.

I have heard that the flocks at Bethlehem were for Temple sacrifice. For that reason the Bethlehem shepherds, who were present at the lambing of the sacrificial lambs, needed to be present at Jesus’ birth.

Sorry, don’t know where I got that and have no reference.
 
What I had heard was that the sacrificial flock was led into Jerusalem in the days right before Passover so that the Jews could buy a lmab and prepare it. The idea being that When Jesus came in riding an donkey He came in at about the same time.

So the shepards guarding the flock at His birth were the shepards of the sacrficial flock and all that entails and His entry into Jerusalem coincided with the entry of the sacrificial flock and I was looking to see if this was valid or some idea that had questionable validity.
 
Joe I also have read somewhere that there was a flock of sheep at Bethlehem which were for the Temple sacrifice. The writer said that these sheep were a type of Christ who was the Lamb offered in sacrifice. Like you I can’t remember where I read this. It was in my early days on the computer and I hadn’t learnt how to copy and save.
