In your opinion, whether you believe it’s infallible or imperfect ( 😛 ), what is the most heart-pulling, beautiful, sacred Requiem Mass setting you’ve heard?

Mozart. I love his Requiem Mass, especially the Lacrimosa section.

Love Mozart, but Faure is my current favorite - the In Paradisum is from paradise.

Such a sad thing that he was killed by the masons. Loss of a beautiful genius.
While Mozart was a freemason, he was not killed by them. He died of illness, and while he himself had suspicions that he had been poisoned, historians have never found such to be very credible.

He had converted from freemasonry, which is why he was poisoned. This history account is because the freemasons covered up the true cause of the death. Masons had and continue to enjoy a good deal of influence and power.

I love Faure’s as well, but my favorite is Durufle’s. He wrote two versions, one for orchestra, the other only vocals and organ. I prefer with only the organ. Despite being a 20th Century work, the vocals are heavily influenced by Gregorian chant styles. It’s very meditative.

Mozart’s Requiem, as some have pointed out, is amazing.

I listen to a lot of classical music and this is by far my favorite piece, in particular the opening “Introitus” piece. Anyone ever see the stunning montage they had with this music in “Smallville”? Exquisitely done.

Haven’t seen that one, but the Dies Irae (which is awesome) was the music playing during the scene when Nightcrawler broke into the White House in X-men 2 and The Incredibles – Jack-Jack Attacks. (And probably others).

Oh yes, I love that song from the Requiem! Haven’t seen the X-Men films yet but am now checking out that scene and I love how they incorporate the requiem into the huge action scene. Very epic.

“The cause of Mozart’s death cannot be known with certainty. The official record has it as “hitziges Frieselfieber” (“severe miliary fever”, referring to a rash that looks like millet seeds), a description that does not suffice to identify the cause as it would be diagnosed in modern medicine. Researchers have posited at least 118 causes of death, including trichinosis, influenza, mercury poisoning, and a rare kidney ailment.[67] The most widely accepted hypothesis is that Mozart died of acute rheumatic fever. [68]”

Thanks! This is a really excellent scene. I love the mix of the sounds too like the gunshots with the requiem music and the subtle hints of modern score slipped in underneath the requiem!

By the way here is a link to that “Smallville” scene with the Requiem in it: youtube.com/watch?v=8XACmF0FPtw

(This is where I first discovered the Requiem actually, so many years ago)
